Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

Uhh.. well, lets put it this way... I don't know. All I can tell you is that it is not a first/second/or third edition of the 1970 Chrysler parts book because the asking price for the genuine 69-70 Chrysler parts book -sept , Feb, or late jun-july issue, was $500 to $600 and some greedy joes...

Thats awesome... and scary. I have visions of bankruptcy court buying those parts... really! Many thanks to you for putting your network at my disposal. I'll start putting a list together and send it on to you when its ready. Not likely I'll be able to buy everything -or anything- right...

Many thanks to member kmccabe56 for the valuable input... and i'm grateful for the input from the other members as well. All of it has already been enormously helpful. I, unfortunately, don't have a "friend" or a guy I know who does body work or has a shop or can rebuild an engine or chrome...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

Detail work continued... I took the guts out of a NAPA power steering pump with the later model reservoir and used it to rebuild the stock '70 Fury GT reservoir unit I repainted... The gloves are to keep my greasy monkey paw prints from making smudges all over my nice clean power steering...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

I really thought I would be able to make a driver out of the S23 that summer but the car had other plans. The former keeper of the car just ripped out anything that needed fixing until the car was basically an engine and a steering wheel. Everything was either broken or missing. Every time I...

With my new found wealth in 2010 I kept my commitment to the project with a lot of parts buying for both cars... while I could. I picked up some power window switches for the GT I got some NOS window cranks for the S23 and some door handles for the GT ... Got my hands on an NOS water heater...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

I would have told you in 2009 that i was totally on board with the idea of "driving" the the S23 as Carsten says. Its what I wanted to do. I thought all I needed to do was fix a couple of thing and get it going. I figured I'd button it up for the winter and get started in the spring of 2010...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

So, Richy's back yard was a jungle that I had to clear -and that took a bit of time to do being a crew of one. I moved the car to the back yard and began a review of the problems with the car. The one bright spot being I actually had a car with a G@#dammd fender tag. The FCBO membership...

We now back track from where the story is... summer of 2009... to January when I took delivery of the GT and realized I was going to need another car. The search was on for a 70 fast back fury, TX9 interior with buckets and console in usable condition that didn't have a concourse car price tag...

Well... since you asked... I was planning to do that because the mission to restore ONE 1970 SFGT basket case accidentally became a tale of TWO FURIES. Hence the title to this thread, a SFGT and an S23. So it is now -drum roll please-

Buuut its waaay too late for that anyway. I'm already committed to the restoration of the "it looks like a GT but we'll never know now for sure" citron (or mystic) gold or green GT sitting in my friends yard lo these many years. Got more content to share -and more controversy I'm sure! :P

Yeah, I think all the hubbub about tags being legit is my fault -I gave the impression that I wanted to do was make a tag with all the stuff I thought my GT ought to have -like chrome exhaust tips or brougham trim, whatever. Well, I had no intention of just putting all the features I wanted on...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

As we saw while I was reverse engineering the fender tag, the radio in the car was the 10 watt AM-8 track unit- with the thumbwheels. I don't know if my car had the brougham package because the broadcast sheet was long gone and so was the vinyl roof so if the brougham insignia was on it it...

Your psychic powers are amazing CanCritter... it DID get worse! Waddaya know! And heeerez how it played out: The ashtray and receiver were rusty junk -tried cleaning up the ashtray but all that pitting made it pointless to try and re do the zinc plating. the vents were toasted -and broken...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

Okay, so after the Carcheological exploration to dig up features, I began to fiddle around inside the car. I decided the best place to start was removal of all the vents, instrument panels, dashboard, ashtray, radio... everything in front. My Idea was to determine what had to be put aside for...

The Sport Fury S/23: how many survived?

And now we add another to the list... As we all saw in the C bodies for sale thread, this S23 beauty just came up for sale on the Craigs List in Omaha NE on Jan 4 2017. I found it in a search a day after the keen eyes of the membership did, then found it was already posted on forcbodiesonly...

Definitely wasn't a gator grain top -but I will have to pull the bits left under the trim and examine them with a magnifier to see if it was boar grain or not.

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

Aww c'mon, throw me a bone here! LOL. I'm doing it the hard way not the easy way... Having been part of the discussion regarding restoration of Dan's yellow V-code, it was clear that some of the membership objects to the "re-body" restoration route regardless of how badly the car was rotted...

Restoration Exasperation: the '70 SFGT basket case... and an S23

Great input guys, thanks! I'll be pulling the engine soon and when I do I'll be scouring the K member for a date code. At least I'll have just about all of the info... Sadly, even if the broadcast sheet HAD been in the car, every place it could have been "hidden" was destroyed by the elements...
