There is an "orig. date" column in the 1986 Dealer Directory. That date is probably related to the agreement that was valid at that moment. For instance, Slate Motor Co, Mount Airy, NC, became a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer in 1964. But their dealership code 64220 points to a Direct Dealer Agreement...

I did not come across any "ordinary" dealer codes in the 10000-19999 range. They must have served some other purpose. For instance, 12003 Chrysler Corporation Fleet Div Employee Lease, Detroit, Michigan seen on a 1978 car.
