usually between the heater hose outlets in the WP housing. but that’s the only place they put in a plug so it may not be there in a 1966 BB. photos work well

Pipe threads, use anti seize and don’t make them too tight. It is nice to remove them later to drain and flush the block as needed. same size as a BB mopar also.

Black smoke is bad, needs more heat as you know. Where are you pointing the temp gun to show the 185? Should use the WP housing thermostat area.

Sounds like the T stat is working properly. Cover part of the radiator with cardboard in cooler weather so it will run a bit warmer. Works at my house.
