Electronic distributors to fit your 383 are available. Points work well if they are properly maintained. I use a Mallory dual point dist. in my 440 with a Streetfire ignition box by MSD. The Streetfire box says " made in U.S.A. on it.
With that setup the points act as a trigger. With a setup...
I think he is saying that you might have grounded the wire that goes from the sending unit on the tank to the gauge. A quick test to see if the gauge is working is to have the ignition key to on and momentarily ground the wire from the gauge. If nothing happens then either the wire is...
Make sure to make a mark on the base of the dist. and the block. This way you can put it back in the same spot if you do remove it. Even though they only go in two ways you could still be off on the timing if you just pulled it out and stuck it back in.
You are most likely right about that, but he still needs to remove it and test it. If that is what it is, then the correct solenoid needs to be hooked up properly, so it doesn't keep happening.
The ignition key is in the dash on 65 Furys if I remember correctly. I would pull out the switch and make sure it is working properly. If you cross the wires from the switch and it starts, then that may be your problem.
I use an MSD Streetfire Ignition Box in my 57 Plymouth. It is hooked up to my Mallory dual point distributor which acts like a trigger. You could just convert the system you have now to the Mopar electronic distributor and ECU. The system on the 72 Barracuda I bought new has always worked great.
I think it is a carb. issue. The carb. is new? Maybe it is running too lean. Try resetting the idle screws and make sure the electric choke is opening all the way.
Are you sure the gauge is the problem? What about the sending unit in the tank? My '57 did the same thing when you turned the key to acc. or ign. On mine it was the float was shot. I replaced it with a new one and it works.
