    Aluminum trim restoration dilemma

I just want to add that i have done a couple of stainless and aluminum projects. I have done a 66 Charger on my own - oven cleaner on the aluminum, HF buffer, Eastwood wheels and compounds. Came out ‘ok’. Send my stainless 63 vette wheels to a guy named Carlos in Palm Coast FL. Came back utterly...

Dash is complete. Painted, polished, cleaned. New bulbs. Lens polished. Silver detailed. Looks brand new. Now I have to set it aside for a while as I await the grain and carpet. I have another show car to get ready so the wagon is rolling out of the shop till May.

SMS Auto Fabric came through on the vinyl. It's been about 3 weeks waiting. I expect the carpet will take a little longer. They told me their famous delays are on making door panels. They say that group is consistently backed up as much as a year as the take a while to make. Now, all I have to...

It's definitely thicker. The inks are jetted on vs likely press-rolled on 40 years ago. My guess is there will be some gap challenges with trim and if it was out in the hot sun all day, it would be fading clearly in 5 years. But the new product is tough as nails asa film goes.

Put the rollers on. Hit them with some grease. Noisy! You hear those knurled barrels rolling on the slide. More resistance too. With the glides it would self close. With the rollers it just makes it to the safety catch and stops.

This is the easiest part of the resto for me. I've wrapped thousands of trucks over the last decade and that gets me lots of favors from the printshop. They are printing me off a couple of large samples and then 'boom' it will be done. I have the 3M Di Noc catalog sitting here.

That's awesome! 30 years ago I got certified in decorative painting in Toronto and wood graining was one of the skills. I never did any wood grain after that but I can appreciate the artistic hand required.

You painted it on? Sounds hard. Did a decorative painter do it? I have a full large format print shop at my disposal so I know they will get me the di noc I need just a matter of choosing between shades and making sure the pattern repeat is large enough to no look obvious on the car.

Problem is I have too many samples. The fender skirts off my parts car are really 'gray'. The original grain on my car was reddish. The grain on the roof rack is pale. I am thinking the best bet is to match it to the dashboard woodgrain. I have pretty much ruled out the parts car sample. The...

Both. I got a quart of vinyl paint for the painter to shoot the removable parts and I got a spray can for some fixed parts I am not removing. I did the same with the lacquer for the metal. A bit of both. The paint store convinced me to try a preval sprayer rather than a rattle can so I bought...

First trim pieces going back on. Thank goodness I searched out and found a pile of new trim clips. Working above the beltline while I sort out the DI-NOC.

I did find a pair based in my part number at a place in CA that is on my other pc so I can't look up the name, but your post raises a couple of other questions. They had two parts (no pics) for that number. One was $10, one was $24. He didn't have a pic or description but only had the $24 model...

Here's a problem. My glide blocks perished. Anyone know where to find them? I hunted around in the web for a while and came up blank.

i started a pseudo resto thread on the exterior and interior forums before realizing there is a restoration form too. Since I was so excited to get some picks back from the painter I felt compelled to post them. He has promised it is all ready when I get back next Friday. In keeping with any...
