Here's a general over view of the rules. "Rust repair" is kind of a grey area you can always fix within reason. I always use 1/8" plate. Go 2 inches past rust and just plate right over it.

I agree and that's what I will do but others don't know what or how to do DIY repairs or maybe just to scared to tackle it, it seems.
