There are some great paints out there that closely match unpainted steel. A light coat of that would not hurt. Or a coat of self etching primer and then the unpainted steel paint.

I used hushmat on my Vette. It really made the car quieter and gave it a more solid feel. I put reflectix insulation from Lowes on top of that. I held the reflectix down with aluminum tape. Reflectix is basically bubble wrap with an aluminum foil on both sides. Great stuff.

I'm jealous of your progress too. I found on another project the best way to keep moving was to work on the car from 5am-7am. I was sleepy most of the time but the project was done in four months.

I would go with the steel of a campbells soup can. I doubt the aluminum would hold up more than...once. Plus, I am going to get a set of those new plastic door clip pry bars. They should do a better job and not mar the paint.
