Replacing upper distributor bushing and related questions (CAP)

Are you sure you know you are replying to a post from 2021? :D I am puzzled about the purpose of your question? Isn't one of the purposes of a forum, that you can seek advice if you are not 100% sure what your are doing? I was probably wrong about why the oil hole in the bushing was misaligned...

Replacing upper distributor bushing and related questions (CAP)

Thanks, I left out a few details not to make it too long winded. But anyone who takes such a job on, will figure it out. Upon further investigation I think I am going to put the CAP distributor on a shelf and go for a standard curved one - possibly an electronic. The spring in my non-adjustable...

    Underhood Ammeter Bypass

So I was advised earlier in this thread, that the 30amp OTP fuse I had used would probably blow due to high currents right after starting. And you were right; it did blow. Twice. I never managed to measure more than 18A in the bypass cable with my amp clamp, but it must have been more than 30 in...

Replacing upper distributor bushing and related questions (CAP)

Thanks :-). I (unfortunately) have a mostly desk job, but attended an "after-school youth club" as a teenager, where I learned to use a 1940-ties lathe in relation to moped and car repair. This was in the early 1990-ties, just a few years before everybody discovered it was dangerously...

Replacing upper distributor bushing and related questions (CAP)

I am very happy I found this forum! thanks to all who replied - if I have missed pressing the "thanks" rating. Also thanks for the hints about Oilite. I know it as "self lubricating bronze" over here. Did not know it was a Chrysler invention (according to wikipedia) The lobes does not look...

Replacing upper distributor bushing and related questions (CAP)

So I wanted to check the points gap on my Imperial ('66 - 440") for the first time. With the points on a lobe - they did not visibly open! The engine ran fine. It turned out the shaft in the distributor had a lot of play (I could get the point to open 3/64" (1mm) rocking the shaft back and...

    Underhood Ammeter Bypass

I will report back to this thread, whether my standard OTP fuse blows due to high charging current spikes or not. If so, I will replace with a 14 or 12 awg fusible link. It will be no earlier than March, when the driving season starts over here in the rust belt of Europe.

    Underhood Ammeter Bypass

Thanks for the advice and specially the dimensions to cut a fusible link myself. I saw those rolls advertised, but had no idea what length to make a link. Are there any rules of thumb or calculations for dimensioning a fusible link? Seems like a typical choice is a fusible link one AWG size...

    Underhood Ammeter Bypass

I am just posting to thank cbarge and all contributors in this thread! Just completed the by-pass on my '66 Imperial. During the process I discovered some sketchy repairs in the original cable harness through the am-meter, but also, that the car has a newer alternator. I don't know if the new...
