Remove the whole assembly. I think all you need to do is remove the two screws on the bracket and just that piece should come off. The entire header panel should not be one piece.

What was the outcome once you got it apart?

Pontiacs generally run hot too so it really won’t like triple digit ambient temps. Does it have Trips?

Call Ames or you can try wrapping it with teflon tape as they suggest in their catalog. It's also possible whoever restored the car used the incorrect year parts and made them fit.
