I have always wondered and wanted to ask but always forgot. I am cleaning the leather seats in my 73 Imperial and my question is. What type of coating is on this leather and how best to treat it? Is it a waste to use leather treatment or is that still recommended on this type of Leather?

Almost all coloured leathers are chromium dyed. Some will have a smoothing filler, a very fine layer. These do create a coating that is somewhat impermeable, however there are all sorts of tiny, and maybe not so tiny cracks. The pores are underneath there.

Whatever you're using to clean did a great job! I'd follow it with the same product lines "treatment." It may contain ingredients that help offset the cleaner.

I use 303 interior cleaner. With an interior brush. Followed by a dry microfiber towel to clean leather. Griot's leather conditioner, I'm at work and all my stuff is at home. Sorry no part numbers. If you REALLY want the seats REALLY clean. Coat them with the conditioner cover each section with black trash bags back it out into the sun for a few hours. Uncover the seats one section at a time and wipe with a clean microfiber towel. Then recondition. You'll be surprised at the grime that comes out of the leather.

I went a head and did a cleaning with the Leno's garage leather cleaner, buffed it with dry micro fibre cloth. I then gave it a liberal rub down of the Leno's garage leather conditioner/protectant, let that soak in and after it was dry to touch gave it a good buffing with thick micro fibre towel. Feels better, I will do this again next week with the conditioner. I wasn't sure about doing the coated leather as all the leather I see being treated look like old leather chair or catchers mit type leather. Thanks.
