Back in 1968 a section of the Penn. turnpike was realigned to ease traffic congestion, there are two tunnels located within this section. They have become a popular tourist attraction and were on my bucket list. pike to bike 2 022.jpgpike to bike 2 024.jpgpike to bike 2 026.jpgpike to bike 2 030.jpgpike to bike 2 035.jpg

The tunnels were too narrow to accommodate the amount of traffic, in some cases a second tunnel was added other times they just moved the road.

Why was it abandoned?

Same reason the road should be abandon now it dangerous narrow and overpriced. I think it is in the neighborhood of $135 to run from OH. to NJ. In a fully loaded truck. Its just over 300 mi, the road is making as much as the wheel holder in the cab per mile. Its probably $45 to drive a car across that POS.

Toll roads are the ultimate government tax ripoff perpetuated by a haven of "connected" so they never really have to work again after never having done real work up to now....

I just drove through two of the tunnels on my journey from Baltimore to Green Bay two days ago.

Is that anything like Hillary's statement of her greatest achievement?

They are another form of welfare. Go bend one 20' section of guardrail on that road and see what they have the balls to charge your insurance company. 8 men @ 8 hr. Plus truck, air compressor, truck to move the machine that puts the new post in, the machine itself. If you have state minimum insurance you will be damn close to maxing your one accident payout.

Sounds like somebody used to drive on the Mass. Pike a lot.

Yes I did. A LOT! But that doesn't have anything to do with my opinion.
My opinion comes from living there all my life and seeing how The Mass. Turnpike Authority, The Port Authority, and all the rest of those stinking quasi-government agencies rape the public with impunity out of pure greed to keep in perpetuity their little fiefdoms. They are dumping grounds for every politician' worthless brother in laws, rewards for state house lobbyists, and they act as if theit **** don't stink.
The Mass Turnpike Authority buys a billion gallons of paint a year for guardrails. Open bids, right? Wrong. In the specs for the paint, they make it so that it's made by only one company who has an exclusive distributer and that distributer has one customer, the Mass Pike. The distributer doesn't even have an office. Just a PO Box and all the paint is drop shipped from the manufacturer.
With every Purchase Order from the Mass Turnpike, the "distributer" sends nice thank you gift to the Purchasing Dept.. The freaking paint isn't even good.
