I've been thinking of putting an alarm in my Newport. Nothing fancy, I just want it to come on with the dome light, but instead of the siren box that you get with a typical aftermarket alarm, I'm wondering how I can use the car horn instead.

I like how the newer cars have the factory alarm and uses the horn to chirp and what not.

If I got a typical alarm I would think I could just eliminate the siren and instead use a relay and hook into the horn? Simple enough, right?

Also, what can I do to prevent anyone from popping open the hood and cutting power right away? Second battery in the trunk or some sort of mechanical way to move the hood release to inside the car?

There's a lot of info there.

If I were to install an alarm, I would look at the Viper brand. They are basically all the same, you wire them into the 12 volts and they sense the power from the dome or trunk light light coming on (no extra switches) or are tripped by a switch (under hood would use a contact switch). Options are vibration sensors like when it's hit or being towed and battery backup systems. Probably a little over $120 to get you into one.

You can go cheaper and simpler. Go to Ebay and look for "Car alarm" and you can see how cheap you can go. That may be what you want.

One thing.... Think about getting some sort of two way remote or something like that. The alarm will notify you that it is going off. Think about how many car alarms you hear and don't think twice about. No one looks... or cares. The only one that cares or is going to do something is you....

Thanks for the help, I hadn't even thought about a paging option, so I might look in to that as well.
