Yesterday i was working on the car (67 ambassador) and I turned the ignition on to check the reverse lights because i cant get them to activate correctly. When i turned back to the car there was smoke under the dash. Turns out the wires going into the back up/turn slot on the fuse panel are the ones that were burning up. They go into the same slot. No damage to the panel or fuse that i can see. Burned the wires from the switch and turn signal which will both need replaced, but i aint touching it until i know what caused this.

Its been fine before. Usually this is due to excess current but i cant understand how.

Switch works fine when manually activated so i would not expect a problem with it. Thanks.

Probably a short to ground somewhere. Look at places where it goes through panels for cuts in the insulation. Also look for worn through insulation in the wire, especially in the wire channel in the rocker.

One thing though.... Look at the fuses. It should have popped a fuse before it smoked any wiring. Make sure there isn't an oversize fuse or something like that.

Thank you John.........found the wire was pinched/shorted behind the dash.
