Hello all, my apologies if this has been posted before, but I've recently discovered this solution called "Evapo Rust" for small rusty parts. Here is the e-brake mechanism from my 300:

Here is the same part after soaking for 24 hours:

Before soaking, the spring action didn't work, now it's smooth as silk. It's a little pricey, $23 a gallon, but is saved me a bunch of hours trying to clean rusty parts. Now if I could only fill a swimming pool with the stuff and soak the whole car...

Yep. Seen it talked about a lot in various places. Good stuff.
Tried to save Miss Belvedere with it but the car started to disappear altogether so they had to stop.

By the way, it's Borax and citrus acid (lemon juice).

Borax and lemon juice? Those are the secret ingredients? I've been looking like crazy for any information on what's in the stuff, the only thing that comes up is that it's non-toxic and safe for everything except drinking. It does have a soapy feel to it. I've heard that white vinegar gives a similar result, but haven't tried it yet.

I wonder what the ratio mix is for the borax and lemon juice? i could do a lot of parts that way and save myself a lot of elbow grease.

Yes, I'd like to know the same thing. Best I could find online was "one cup of Borax to lemon juice". Ok, How much lemon juice?

I just looked it up too, here's the result,
[h=3]Rust Remover Recipe II[/h][h=3]INGREDIENTS[/h]
  • Borax
  • Lemon juice
[h=3]PREPARATION[/h]1. Mix together equal parts Borax and lemon juice.
2. Apply the resulting solution to the rust by spraying or dabbing it on (if the object is large), or by submerging the object in a bath of the solution (if the object is small).
3. Allow the solution to soak in for 30 minutes. Then, rinse the object off; and dry thoroughly.
4. Repeat the process, if rust remains.

Thank you, I will be trying this tomorrow. Buying gallons of Evapo Rust is going to bankrupt me before the car is done!

I wonder if I can fill a swimming pool and dunk my entire NYB in it! LOL!

We have a similar product over in Europe, they recommend not to use it in closed section like rocker panels etc.

ive used oxalic acid on a lot of BMX bike frames.. but you have to wash and then oil the part as soon as it comes out of the bath, or it will start to rust again.

ya like John ^^ said :)

I have thrown a whole bike into a oxalic acid bath (in the master bathroom bath tub of course, where else?) tires, bearings, seat, frame, the whole complete assembeled bike. no harm, not even to the decals on the frame. let it soak a bit, and the rust is history.

A lot of the chrome inside my 53 Windsor was really nasty. A combination of green crud, dirt and corrosion. A few minutes in the oxalic and they looked 100% better. The pits are still there, but geez... the rest of it looked pretty good.

here is a Roger D soaking with some rims. 100_3746.jpg

I've considered 55 gl. drums, kiddy wading pools, etc.

What ratio do you use (lbs/gal)?

I like the electrolysis process in the one link. I'm going to have to try that one. It looks like the ratios are determined by how good of acid you can get the thread starter said 3 tbs per gallon, another guy had 10 lbs per 40 gal but I sounds like it works good.

ya a kiddie pool would work for a tub. you can use premixed behr wood bleach, I think is behr #63... but if you can find the OA powder/crystals, mix it yourself. I don't remember the mix ratio commando,,, but it was whatever the side of the container said... that maybe was the last bike I restored ^^ in 2007... so I haven't done it for a while now...I used to collect and restore old BMX bikes, still have a couple laying around. I kept that roger Decoster ^^ for sure.
