Front window rear steel lead sealant/glue?

While installing my front window on my 68’ 300, the steel edging on the rear of the glass fell off. There appears to be a rubber insert with a brown cement or glue. Can this be replaced or and what would the glue/cement/sealant be?

In many cases, "glass tape" is used to wedge the glass into the channel. Various thicknesses, but be sure to get the solid rubber item, as some come with bits of cork in them. We always used the full rubber tape. No adhesive, just the friction of the tape against the glass and chrome. Be careful.

I believe the rubber is more of a butyl rubber than "tubeless tire tube" rubber, so it is soft and sticky.

It’s not glue or tape. It is a type of fabric that seams to be cloth and rubber mix. When I did mine I went to an auto glass shop and they gave about 2 feet of it. They said that you set the strip on the glass, start the molding and tap in on with a rubber hammer. I was not excited about hitting it with a rubber hammer but they said that glass would take it and it did. They also said if I brought it in they would do it. I figured I would try it first and if it started to go bad I would take it in. It was a little nerve wracking but it worked and went smoothly.

BTW this should be done with the window out. I think trying to tap it on with the window supported by the mounts might stress it and break it. The shop told me to do it out of the car.

Over the years that our dealership techs did "glass work", the original glass tape we had was pure rubber. Later versions had a thin-thread cloth component in it. Some had cork in it, too. Personally, I liked the butyl rubber for its conformability, from looking at it.

What our guys were doing was replacing the back glasses in the tailgates of Suburbans and side window glasses in the doors. Pretty easy to do. The closest glass shop was at least 45 minutes away.
