Hi Guy's

Ok my 1960 Fury has a 318 poly with a 3 speed auto all standard. When you start the car the starter makes a hell of a noise. The starter has been replaced & the noise is still there. Once it starts there is no noise.

The guy I brought if from said he was told it had the wrong converter in it.
He said he was told it has a converter out of a 61 model are 60, 61 the same converters ?

How many teeth should the ring gear have ?

The one in the car has 176 teeth is this correct ?

It has a starter that has 3 bolts to bolt it on.
The starter is a Auto-Lite #MDU-7001
from what I can find on the net this is the correct starter ?

All help & info greatly appreciated...I need to sort this out to get on the road cruising

Thanks Oz

I know that Mopar starters made as recently as the late '60's do not require shims the way some GM cars do, but I had no idea about the ones built prior to that. If you have a shim-type arrangement, they can be a bit tricky. You may also want to check for a bent stud or bolt that holds the starter in. I have seen this cause nasty issues with alignment, resulting in mishaps. As far as the difference in converters is concerned, try verifying that they are the same part number. If the part numbers do not match, that may tell you something about the possible cause.
