well i finally got tired of riding around all month without reverse so i got my 66 sp up in the air today to pull the trannie to fix the broken reverse band but all that was wrong is that it broke the lip off the apply piston for the low reverse band servo. man was i lucky. only took me all day to find the pistn tho. glad i didn't have to order it.

Had the same issue and upon close inspection I found that the retaining ring just didn't have the expansion capability as it should and I knew it would just pop out of the retaining groove again down the road. I purchased a new retainer and found the fit was much tighter in it's groove. I'm sure this all resulted from the faster and firmer shifts created by the shift kit I installed. Having too much gap between the band and the drum also contributes to the piston hammering against the retainer due to a longer throw of the piston so adjust and readjust about a month later. This will keep the gap at minimum as the band initially wears in.

alot of shift kits have you to shim the spring cushion on the piston to make it solid but i don't like to do that because it engages reverse to hard and is really hard on the band making it want to breake cause there isn't any give. my 66 piston was oil filled dampening not a spring and i knowed i wasn't going to find one of those and the billit ones you buy are just the piston that you replace on the spring and aply pin not the whole asemb.

I envy you guys who know automatic.
I dont even know what an apply piston is.
And no, please don't tell me.

With a mind like yours... no problem. Learning how an automatic works is pretty easy. The experience factor comes in when diagnosing and inspecting components... and of course the expert rebuilder will do ten before you finish your first. I have done a little, but I usually go to someone more experienced or the manual to get questions answered in boxes I'm not familiar with (most of them).

was prob fury pics 003 (6).jpgably a retaining ring out of a 904 trannie. they are a little smaller and would come out under 400 lbs. of pressure.

the band begins to stretch out of roundness and is less efective in holding. the band always comes on when the trannie is not moving, in rev. or low gear. if the sec. gr. band and rev. band come on at the same time you have an instant tranny brk. this happened to me one nite at 40 mph. talk about a hairy ride.
