Plastic fuel tank????

So when did they make plastic fuel tanks for 65 Fury's. ???

Factory one's were all galvanized metal. NASCAR experimented with a rubber lined tank for the '65 season. Putting a puncture resistant rubber lining in the tanks was designed to prevent large fuel leaks in the event of a major crash. With some modifications, the rubber lined tanks became the NASCAR standard for the '66 racing season.

I had heard that before. This however appears to be a duplicate of the metal tank that is hard plastic.......magnet wont stick and it flexs if pushed hard enough.....:wtf:

When tapped upon it gives a dead thud vice the sound a metal tank would make.....

NO OEM plastic fuel tanks until the later 1980s, as I recall. Everything prior was galvanized metal, as mentioned above.

Fuel cells were a racing-only innovation for safety in the event of a collision or roll-over situation.

Might the tank you've tapped on have been cleaned and coated internally to combat existing rust and future ethanol phase separation damage?

Enjoy!
