radiator shrouds:

My 68 Newport convertible didn't come with a radiator shroud. Is it supposed to be metal our plastic? I bought the fan clutch a while ago but haven't put it on yet. Sorry , it's 383, orginally with Carter two bbl, now Edelbrock Performer and a Holley 4bbl.

OEM was plastic. One isn't absolutely necessary but it sure helps.

I don't know.

The only metal one I ever saw was on a 68 R/T.

That's what mine for is

I pulled it off a mid 60's C body over 30 years ago and it's sat in the garage ever since. I remember Dad asking me why I was pulling it and that Road Runners didn't come with metal 2 piece shrouds (I had a 68 and 70 RR at the time) .. I'm glad I went ahead and pulled it !

Now that I think about it may have been a 67 or 8 hardtop. I also pulled a rear window defroster off the same car .. which is where I think the defroster cut out C body rear package tray in Dad's garage probably came from

The c body's used 2 different ones. The 2 piece metal shroud was for the 22" radiator. and the plastic one was for the 26" radiator.

I'd definately use a fan shroud considering the high temps here in Florida for 6 months of the year.Just make sure your radiator is up to par and your hoses are good too.When in doubt,it pays to spend the money and replace those hoses rather than get stuck somewhere and have to pay for a flatbed to tow you after you've broken down.It's also a good time to replace your belts to make sure there's no slippage and your water pump is working at it's optimum.My 67 NYer 440 with 26" Rad. had a one piece plastic shroud.During the cooler parts of the year when temps are below 75 there shouldn't be a problem. I know this from driving my car without one across the state 180 miles but I'd still go with one to play it safe.

Did you ever consider using electric fans? I know some of you out there will cringe but you can also gain a little hp and better mileage without the extra drag that a fan produces on the engine.

Electric fans put a higher load on your charging system. They may save you 10hp if that. A good 7 blade fan and thermal clutch with shroud is fine.
