Valve cover smoke after switching to synthetic oil

BITOG has a sub-forum where people post VOA (virgin oil analysis). This is an analysis of new oil, not used oil. About a year ago I took the data in one of the posts and used Excel to plot the Zinc level against the Phosphorus level. Here is the resulting scatter plot:

VOA-P-vs-Zn.gif

The top oils in terms of Zinc and Phosphorus were:

50 Grade Amsoil Dominator 15w-50
40 Grade Amazon Basics 0w-40
40 Grade Redline 0w-40
50 Grade Mobil 1 SuperCar 5w-50
30 Grade Oils Redline HP 5w-30
30 Grade Oils Castrol Edge Euro Car A3/B4 5w-30
40 Grade Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40
40 Grade Motul 300V Comp 5w-40
40 Grade Quaker State UD 5w-40
40 Grade Mobil 1 Euro 5w-40
40 Grade Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w-40
30 Grade Oils BMW TwinPower Turbo 5w-30
30 Grade Oils HPL SC 0w-30
40 Grade Castrol Edge 5w-40
40 Grade Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40
40 Grade Castrol Edge 0w-40
40 Grade Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0w-40
40 Grade Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40
40 Grade Castrol Edge 5w-40
40 Grade Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40
40 Grade Quaker State Euro 5w-40

These have P values from 1450 to 830, and Zn levels from 1600 to 970. The Amsoil Dominator having the highest levels of both (1450 P, 1587 Zn). I'm not sure the units, could be PPM.

Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 was mentioned in BITOG as an appropriate oil for flat tappet engines with stock valve springs. For "built" engines with stiffer springs, Amsoil Zrod oil is probably the way to go.

The shell rotella diesel pil is usually pretty good as well. Im currently using pennzoil but only cause I bought out homedepo that discontinued it and sold it for 1.50$ for 5 qt
