For abt a year now, I'm lucky to get 4-5 hrs of undisturbed sleep. Tried melatonin, walking before supper, eating earlier to aid digestion, watching TV- not watching TV, reading more and spending less time scrolling. Last resort is a Dr. visit, but I really don't want prescription sleeping pills.....anyone else with this problem and any solutions??

and if i sleep I sleep with one eye open.

I haven't slept much for most of my life. Did sleep studies etc. etc. I'm also not willing to take additional meds. Several doctors have told me it's not a concern .....FOR ME..... You probably should see your doctor to make sure nothing else is going on but don't get worried for no reason and don't take medical advice from friends-relatives telling you horror stories about the "dangers" of not sleeping.

Try to get some naps in. Try some manual labor around the house/yard to tire your self out

I've been experiencing a huge amount of body pain in the past few years and if I don't take some kind of med I'm not going to sleep at all.

I tried it the other night again to see and i was awake in the neighborhood of 90% of the time i was trying to sleep.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues if you are concerned.

I would suggest if you haven't already, cut the caffeine out of your daily liquids.
this is a big one for us seniors:rolleyes:

My issue is work related.. I work the overnight shift.. SUCKS!!!!!! Trying to sleep during the day is awful. Even with black out shades and a sleeping mask.. No Bueno........ could be an age related thing for ya! Things change when you got some miles on ya. Lol

I am with polara71 I usually can't sleep when work and personal life both are stressful or trying to problem solve, and my brain won't shut off.

Here is my best remedy, I usually always have two books I'm reading at the same time. One's a history book kind of dry, can put you to sleep on its own, also a more enjoyable easy read.

I read the history book if I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep. I find the enjoyable read is better at getting my mind off the stresses of the day . I read it in the evening, science fiction or fantasy works the best for me, because you can completely escape reality for a while.

I enjoy mystery and detective books too, but I find they don't help me sleep, because my mind ends up trying to solve the mystery or case. :)

Is it age induced? I just got to 6-0
As you've heard, there are no easy pick on a cause or any across the board solution. I know from my own experience and talking with others in our age group, (turned 60 this year too), it is not an uncommon thing. Don't dismiss a doctor visit though, just to rule out anything more serious.

i'm with polara71, zymurgy, and mr fix it. work related stress. i take two 200mg ibuprofens before bed to ease physical pain, but they make me drowsy as well for about a half hour, just long enough to pass out. try a glass of red wine?

I work overnight shift as well, and I sleep like a baby. I had to tell myself over a decade ago while stressing out about whatever it was, "there is nothing you can do about it until tomorrow, so sleep", and it worked like a charm and I've only had two days since then I had trouble getting to sleep. Yeah, I know, it's not that easy. Well, it was for me. I had to tell myself it's all in my head, so I can make it stop til after I sleep. My girlfriend hates it, I can sleep in the middle of the afternoon with the sun shining on my face, dog barking and grandkids screaming.

Only person I know with insomnia uses marijuana to sleep. Not legal everywhere, your state may vary. CBD oils may help, not sure though. They do relax your body.

I'm afraid of what the docs might inside my noggin'.

I used to be able to do the Advil route as well but it doesn’t cut the mustard anymore

Funny you say this... I was up until 4:00 AM last night because I couldn't sleep.

I've had sleep issues on and off for years. Time release Ambien got me through a really bad spot ten years ago. I stopped taking them and it took a couple nights of sleeplessness before I could sleep without it, but I did sleep better after that. Over the counter meds usually have the opposite effect and keep me awake.

Pain has been most of my issue with not sleeping. I have to be careful as some pain meds will really put me to sleep and I won't move at all. Then I wake up in the morning in worse pain. I can't take NSAIDS anymore, so two Tylenol sometimes combined with half a Tramadol seems to be about the best if I need it, but the Tramadol doesn't do much for sleep.

I have also taken Tylenol PM, which is just Tylenol spiked with Benedryl. That seems to knock me out if I've had a couple bad nights and need to sleep.

I also will watch TV, choosing something that isn't really interesting, or read. My Kindle works great for reading as it doesn't keep my wife up. If I go for two hours of not getting to sleep, I stop trying and get up. I'll have a snack and sit in my recliner with some heat on my back and neck (source of pain) and read or watch TV. Then I usually get sleepy and can head back to bed. Being retired lets me sleep in the next day.

Once again, last night I woke up at 5am and couldn't fall back to sleep. I used to read myself (back) to sleep all the time when I was single, but I can't anymore. The light would wake up my wife. I grab my cellphone off the night-table and read news articles until I get tired enough to sleep again, but it's not as effective. I also can't read in another room and then come back to bed because I'd be fully awake again by the time I got into bed.

I used to take Valerian root extract, which seemed to be fairly effective. I should try that again.
