Hi Everyone.
I know this has been dealt with before, but cant find it and my FSM not very clear.
I replaced door hinge pins and bushings on the drivers door ( 67 chrysler Newport Custom 2 door hard top) I had hinges off the body and off the door because i wanted to paint them. Now... i put door back on and try to adjust it. seems like every time i try i make it worse. i had the height ok but not now.
do the hinges on the body control forward and back as well as uo and down? sorry for the long post.

The hinge mount to the door pillar is slotted so you can move the hinge forward or backwards. This will raise the trailing edge of the door up or down to get the door to line up with the striker. The striker is also slotted and can be taken loose to move it in or out or up and down. The hinge mount is also slotted on the door itself to set the door in or out and up/down relative to the body. If both hinges have been off, it is likely that the slotted slider in the door pillar has dropped down to where the door may be in conflict with the rocker, the same is also true of the hinge mount on the door frame. This can be a PIA. Take the pillar bolts loose, then take a jack under the inner part of the door near the hinges and gently lift the door until the top of the door and the top of the fender are at the same height have a helper hold the door so that it does not flop around, the trailing edge of the door should be supported to keep the door level to the body. If you can not get enough height to get the door the same height as the fender this way you may also need to repeat this process with the hinge mount on the door. One you have the height correct, note the amount of space between the door edge and the fender, it should clear freely and be the same distance from top to bottom. Now tighten up the bolts to the pillar. Gently try to close the door and check the position of the door relative to the fender. If needed, take loose the bolts on the door side of the hinge and adjust the door in/out the get the alignment correct with the body lines on the fender. Do one hinge at a time. Next tighten all of the bolts up and test the door closure. You will probably also need the change the striker position. If the door closes properly, you are done. If not, repeat the fine adjustments until you get it right. It is a good idea to put several layers of painters tape on the door edges so that paint does not get scraped off during the adjustment process.

Hopefully, you reinstalled the hinges in the same "paint wintness markings" as they had from the factory? Hinge to door and hinge to body. As things obviously were good when the car was initially built, I suspect.

There is tons of adjustability in the older hinge and striker mountings, which can allow for some really bad bodywork to look fine, by observation. But if you start from "Zero", you can get in trouble pretty quickly. Which makes "putting it back like it came" important, BEFORE trying to make it better (hopefully).

In theory, if you put the hinges back in the witness marks on the door and on the body, things might fall into place quickly. Then you can adjust the striker as needed/if needed . . . in a perfect world.

Just some thoughts and observations,

When doing a door re-install, I typically remove the striker and work with the door until the body lines and gaps are perfect and, top and bottom of the door are flush to the adjacent panels with no binding. Then re-install the striker and adjust it, watching that the striker does not influence the adjustment of the door when closing.
