I've always loved the kit car theory... And I remember staring at the literature and the direct connection catalog always wishing I could do that. But, I never could afford it. A few posts ago, someone said you could get the entire kit without an engine for $8800. Man that sounds enticing, But.... I found an inflation calculator on the internet, that if you put in the year, and how much you paid back then for something it would calculate what it would cost in today's, or actually for realities sake, back then's real money... so that 8800 in 1978 would be like..... take a deep breath.....$32,140.52 in today's money! No wonder I never looked into it any farther. But for guys like Petty and such it was actually CHEAP!
No matter... I still love the concept and the cars!

Don White, who holds the record for most USAC stock car wins, recently passed away. Below is a link to a reunion he attended. Lots of neat pictures. If you scroll down you will see a picture of the Dodge Aspen he raced starting in the middle of 1976. The caption says it is not a "Kit Car", but rather started life as a B-body and was "Cut down" to an F-body. To me it would seem almost impossible to do that. Anyone with experience please feel free to correct me.

That happened a lot. Buddy Arrington cut his Magnums to fit Miradas
It is my understanding it still does, I work with a guy who part times a few weekends in the Continental Tire Series and historic races... he hasn't run a full season in a few years. When he was working regularly, he often complained about whatever chassis was hacked by the last change to the rule book or rebody. I have gathered that he has the most fun working for a cheap owner who is more concerned with renting seats than fielding a competitive car/driver. When I go to the track, I just want to be a spectator and not have to drive myself home. Hot pits are the last place I want to be...

Bob, I love what you do here... thanks.
