Just found my build sheet and see that my 71 New Yorker has 2.76 gears. This explains why it is so slow off the line, oh and the fact that it is huge. I'm in the Boston area and would be in the market for a complete posi rear end. Not sure exactly what gears I'm looking for. Any recommendations ? Thanks everybody.

That's going have to be some sort of specialty thing ... I doubt you'll find one here haha

Sorry ... car make humor. Posi is a Chevy term. Mopar name is suregrip.

I'd look for a 3.23 suregrip rear .. that will provide some extra ummph and reasonable revs at cruising speed.

P.S. I like spongebob better from the pre season 4/5 years better

3.23 suregrip did liven my car up and doesn't kill it on the highway. Nice to take off when you have to and not sit there and smoke one tire.

I would look on ebay or car sites and find a hog head & replace just that instead of changing the whole rear axle.

i've been using the universal term limited slip differential

You need to either locate what they call a "center section", or "chunk", or "pig" either as an operational unit or as a core to have built. Or buy one ready built. Given what's left on the used parts market these days, I'd either buy a core and have it rebuilt to your specs locally, or buy a complete unit from Dr Diff (Cass Eslick).

Well unless you want to do 2 tire burn outs you could just upgrade to a 3.23 open rear end. I would think that would be easier and cheaper.

There's a reason why they're in demand and it's not for burn outs...

Well, not only for burn outs

Well I would like to hear all the reasons why. I am interested in your opinion with old cars as these. My guess would be if you had a deeper ratio like 3.55 or more you would want more acceleration and need both rear wheels pushing the barge along. I have considered sure grip conversion but with a 3.23 ratio I wondered if it would be worth it. Then if I went to a deeper gearing and sure grip would I be pissed off while on the highway. That is why I ask.

Exactly. 3.23 gears (w/ SG) offer great pickup while maintaining highway drive-ability at low RPM. It is IMHO well worth the upgrade.
On a side note; Do they even make rear ends of a higher ratio without SureGrip?
