so I swapped a 1976 440 into my 67 New Yorker. The 76 has a 1 prong temp sensor and my car is wired for a 2 prong. I ordered what was supposed to be a correct 2 prong and it is way too big to fit. Is there any way to just wire up the 1 prong into my existing wiring?

Quite the size difference

If the threads are the same size and pitch, the new one you have looks correct for a 440 block. Have you actually tried to see if it threads in?

They go in different holes in the water pump. Look for a plug on top.

This is a pic I grabbed for 440source. It has the arrows there already. The small hole on the left is for the smaller sender. The lower right hole is the heater hose connection. The hole above it is for the larger sender and the one above that is the other heater hose.

See the piece in the yellow circle?

That piece is part of the 76 smog system. IIRC, it delays vacuum to the distributor until the car is warm. Obviously, you aren't using it and even have the two ports blocked off. It's nothing you need or want.

Take that out and toss it over your shoulder. Put the new sender in the hole with some Permatex or similar sealer on the threads.

Leave the old sender in place or replace it with a new pipe plug.

Thank you so much. I was wondering if I could do that or not.

Well, took that out and this new one that was sent to me still doesnt fit. Do you have a part number or anything for the 2 post temp sensor that will fit?

It should fit - it's odd that it doesn't. They are kind of a generic sensor that fit MANY models. Perhaps the later water pump housing is different. Do you know if there's a sensor for hot and cold lights from the original later year the motor is from?

To go against Big John's recommendation (with the utmost respect of course!), I have been told to not put anything (like pipe thread sealers) on the sensor threads, as it needs to connect to the block to make the hot or cold circuits complete. Those are supposed to be NPT fittings and are supposed to not leak. If anything, only put sealer on the very last few threads just below the actual nut portion of the sensoe so that a few threads still make good contact with the block.

Big John, is Permatex conductive?

You know... You are 100% right. I never gave it a thought. I was worried about getting it sealed.

The brass should seal ok without anything.

Im going to say both. This new one is absolutely massive. I did find one for a Ramcharger that is 3/8" 18npt with the 2 prongs that should work, I hope.
What size is the piece that I had you take out??

Don't take this wrong, but a lot of folks don't understand pipe thread (NPT) sizes very well. If you do, that's great. If you don't, what is the diameter of the new sender and the old senders? I can figure out NPT from that.

I think you have the wrong sensor/switch. Do you have a guage or light, usually the single pole is for guage and the light is two pole switch.
The 2 pole should not be affected by sealer it is a separate circuit (unless you goop it all over probe) the guage single pole grounds through the threads so it may be a issue, they usually come new with sealer higher up on the threads.

The two pole sender is for the "idiot" lights. One pole is for the cold light and the other is for the hot light. It does depend on ground through the block.

As far as I know, the 2 pole is also grounded for the hot/cold lights to function. One terminal for the "cold" light, and one for the "hot" light.
