I have 12v on the battery, car off. Turn the key, get nothing just some clicking under the hood that I assume is the starter. My car is a 65 New Yorker 413. Question is will a starter work from a 66 Newport 383 to test to see if the starter is bad and is there a starter available to replace the bad one if it is the starter in the 65 NY'r

That starter will work but before you do that, check battery voltage and that the cables are tight.

Take a quarter or an old screwdriver and place it between the two terminals on the starter relay to check the relay.

A lot of starters are replaced without checking the basics first, wasting time and money.

The clicking that you are hearing is the starter relay kicking in to supply power to the starter. A battery that is fully charged should be showing about 12.8 volts. Be sure that the battery cables are clean and charge the battery or hook up a jumper battery and attempt to start the car. If it still won't start, disconnect the solenoid lead to the starter from the relay (That is the lead with the flat head screw connection) Hook a wire with alligator clips to the positive cable on the battery. Touch the other end of this wire to the disconnected solenoid lead. If the starter engages, your starter relay is bad. If nothing happens, the starter is probably bad. The 383 and 413 both use pretty much the same starter, so exchange of starters should work. Starters are still readily available for your application. Last time I needed one, Napa could still get them.

Good info both of you. Will run through the tests before replacing anything. Thanks guys

On my 68 300 Convertible i had a starting issue where all my lights and every would work but when i turned the key i would hear a single click. I just put a new battery and a new starter a few days before. Turns out it was my starter rely I cleaned the points starts every time now.

Jumped a wire from the battery to the solenoid. Got nothing unless I wiggled the jumper wire on the battery. Sound like a bad starter to you guys?

Was the solenoid engaging when you wiggled the jumper? Sounds like you did not have a good connection. If the solenoid engaged and the starter did not turn the engine, the starter is dead. You might try tapping the starter with a hammer, this will sometimes free one that is stuck. If it was stuck, usually the starter is not long for this world.

Once I wiggle the wire the starter engages and wants to turn the engine but it mostly sounds like it's stuck. Been tapping on it for 2 days trying to get it freed up

Bearings are probably bad. Time for a new one.

Ok been a while but here’s the issue I’m having

Starter is not engaging the fly wheel sometimes. Sometimes turn the key it sounds like it just spins and after a few tries it’ll engage and start. Starter did it with the old one and has been replaced with a reman and the problem consists. Don’t remember any shims coming out when I took the old one out and bench tested it and re installed it. Nothing on the garage floor. Any thoughts?

Several possibilities. You could have chipped teeth on your converter or flywheel.
Secondly, have you checked your battery voltage? Low voltage can make starters do strange things. Check your starter relay. Corroded contacts in the relay will cause a voltage drop which will affect the performance of the starter. Check the wiring harness to the starter for broken or frayed wires. Broken strands of wire to the starter will cause a voltage drop. Be sure the bolts that attach the starter are tight and properly torqued. Mopar starters usually do not have shims to worry about. Do you have any oil leakage issues, oil soaked starters perform poorly. Finally, the quality of re-man starters varies greatly, any of the ones reworked overseas are highly suspect.

Hi guys. Looked up a starter thread & here I am.
My symptoms are the same: battery fine, good terminals, just a click.
I don’t know what a starter relay is; someone said use a screwdriver or jump a
Lead from the positive to where?
