"Sympathetic" restoration??

Upon receiving the daily Hemmings update, I read about a Chevy Vega Cosworth that received a "Sympathetic" restoration. That's a new term (for me) that I've not heard before...please enlighten me!!!

I’m guessing a “Sympathetic” resto is one that raises the question. “Why bother?

Most of the restorations done by CPR, we would classify as high quality sympathetic restorations. The definition of a sympathetic restoration is that the work scope is limited to what each individual car being restored to this level requires. A watch collector described it as a restoration that follows the spirit of the original watch.

An antique clock collector wrote as follows: "There are many disciplines involved in antique clock restoration that demand a knowledge of the history of the specific timepiece. Some of these include early carpentry methods, lacquering, dial restoration, silvering and gilding, wheel cutting and bushing, reconstructing broken or lost parts, cleaning and lubricating, dismantling and assembly and of course thorough testing. We use the appropriate professional for the work involved, and all work is performed by craftsmen possessing a high degree of competency in the skill required. They work with care, pride in their accomplishments and a real passion for antique clocks."

And, in "Understanding the Art Market: Condition, Restoration and Conservation" one blogger wrote: "Sympathetic restoration is crucial in any field. We deal in antique clocks and furniture and unless you restore sympathetically you can destroy the value of anything."

A home remodeler wrote in connection with the term "[w]e work hard to ensure that any work we carry out closely matches the original style of the property. This is very important when working on period buildings."

And an article discussing the restoration of the Georgian Theatre Royal (England) notes, "Theatre trustees were praised for the sympathetic and detailed approach to the restoration of the landmark venue."

Restore or Preserve?

In "Classic Mustang Forum" (a website for car collectors) one contributor wrote of a car as "ridiculously original". That term might sum up the goal of "sympathetic restoration". "
 
So, in a nutshell, it seems to me that it's leave original anything that can be left original and correctly restore anything that needs to be restored.

Makes sense to me... This is the way I've been working on my Barracuda project.
 
So not a "restoration", just normal maintenance/repair to keep it going. I've been doing "sympathetic restorations" on all of my vehicles and didn't know it.
 
The term has been used for decades. It usually refers to a detailed and complete, correct restoration; being careful to preserve and keep the car correct; as built.

And that usually translates into = $$$$$$
 
So, it appears that type of restoration can be more "budget-minded" than the "tear it all apart and put it back together again" approach. Address what needs to be addressed while preserving original stuff where possible. Didn't know there was a term for that! A more preservationist's approach?

As for the Cosworth Vega, it's still a Vega, but one with a highly-tuned "Cosworth"/Chevy 4 cyl. It had Bendix EFI, a factory header, chassis upgrades to go with the engines upgraded power, and gold graphics and special Minilite-style wheels with gold spokes (I saved one from a GM parts "scrap" return). So, not your ordinary Vega. At the time, only the Cosworth Vega and the Cadillac 500 cid engine were the only Bendix EFI cars GM built. FWIW

No rust was removed:lol:
 
I have long been a fan of the Vega, the Cosworth was unique, I believe 2 years only. The engine was a lot better then Chevy's aluminum 2.3 4 cyl
