Remember when?

For years, my late night havens was HoJos. Now those were great places to be in the early hours. I miss Howard Johnsons.

I'll assume you have seen idiocracy?

You really need to see "Idiocracy". It is the future.
I didn't think much about that movie at first... but it has become a little too satiric of our world.

Actually... You guys need to do the Movie Tavern experience if there's one near you. Comfortable recliners with table service. Good food too. No elbow to elbow nonsense. I swore off going to the movies after sitting next to a drunk while watching Gran Torino. Mrs. Big John got me going to the Movie Tavern and it's now an enjoyable experience.

My brother made me go to one when I was in AZ. Went to the latest Star Wars, but he picked a late show and after a beer or two I had a very nice nap. Too comfortable has disadvantages too.

I heard that the average IQ of the population is in decline. I’m not surprised as nobody has to figure things out for themselves anymore.
My personal observations... the young folks are now in an education system that seems to view "figuring stuff out" as a problem. They are seldom if ever asked to do so. Unless they get that thought pattern at home or by doing stuff themselves (the earlier bike tube/tire posts for example... new tubes and tires are worth as much as a cheap bike at wallyworld) they don't seem to be equipped with the skill set. It's their parents fault for not owning tools or allowing (assigning) tasks for them to use them.

Before I get accused of bashing, I don't mean to... I never had to learn how to shoe a horse... for some members, that was just a tire rotation :poke::D

In the age 25-50 category I see three types of engineers.

1) A standout of high intelligence who carries the weight of his/her group.

2) People from places where a good majority of their peers ride animals and have never seen reinforced concrete. They became engineers to escape said place, but have zero interest in the subject matter and it shows.

3) White males who grew up in neighborhoods with HOAs, where opening the hood would get you a dirty look, and removing a wheel would get you a fine. However, these are the higher income areas where children go to college. They're primarily interested in their college sportz team, but the best in this category own a "project car"... Usually a VW Passat with carbon fiber wiper arms. They say things like "I didn't know you could get power windows in the 70s? Wow!"

I imagine this issue exists across all industries, but it also explains why technology from the 1900s is being recalled almost 20 years into the 20th century.

There is/are a fourth type of engineer. They are only interested in marks and class standing. They memorize, without understanding to become expert exam writers. These people graduate at the top of their classes but are totally useless in the real world where problem solving requires understanding and innovation, not the ability to quote text books. I used to hire a lot of highly trained engineers and programmers and during the first year threw them all into "swamp", those that survived were kept. I discovered, especially with programmers, the best of the best flunked out and never graduated, they were bitten by the programming bug to become so immersed in coding that they stopped going to classes. Most of these people were amazing and worth their weight in gold. Fortunately there are a lot of these "drop-outs".

I cannot disagree with this at all.
But after not bathing for a month, consuming 99% of their nutritional needs from a vending machine, and unable to figure out which end of the screwdriver to hold, they are useless in Society.

Most of these younger "Engineers" are not Engineers and do not do any Engineering. They know everything about Minecraft cheats and that's it.
From my very limited exposure, and I have had a small number come through at work... none of them could cut it when it was time to go flat rate, they all found different jobs in a non-automotive career.

I know nothing about Minecraft... and you're correct... most of those "perfect score, 4.0 types" know nothing about figuring out a problem. From my observations, most get their big grades by being a little bit photographic in their memory. Our education system rewards this, but reality does not. The dumber guy who busts his *** to pass is the one you want fixing your car. He's learned how to understand how the thing works and is willing to work hard to make things right. The smart guy starts telling you how it's the car's fault for not matching the textbook, or the textbook was flawed...

I'd like to meet #1 someday... I've personally been burned by #2... and #3 is often a joke you can spot right away by the stupid remarks.
Excellent assessment of the types...

You'll never meet a type 1 outside of work. Their species is socially awkward.

I have found success with H.S. summer help. Those that actually show an interest and aptitude in engineering and our business will get their college tuition paid.
