1973 440

Hi, was a 440 engine an option in this model? thanks

1973 Dodge Polara CUSTOM | eBay

This is a factory 440 T code car. There were not a lot of these produced in '73. Gas shortages killed the demand for big engines. The majority of '73 cars with the 440 were police cruisers and vehicles with the heavy tow option. This particular car has a fairly high production sequence and was likely produced late in the model run for someone who ordered it with the big engine. Dealers did not stock big engine cars because fuel shortages made them very difficult to sell. I would be curious if this vehicle has any history, as it is very unusual to see a car of this vintage with so few miles. Someone would need to get eyes on it to verify the condition.

T code 440 was a regular production option.
U code 440 was only available in police package cars in 72 and 73

You could still get a U-Code engine on B-Bodied Road Runners and Chargers for purposes of clarity. The U code engine was available, at least in theory, for most C-Bodied mopars for '72-'73, but few examples are known to exist outside of the aforementioned police and tow applications. (U-Code still showed in the dealer order books).

My 73 New Yorker was a T-code, but as I understand it all New Yorkers were 440 equipped, regardless of gas crunch.

Sweet looking Polara

In 72 Chryslers fitted with the U 440 came with dual exhaust (245 hp) instead of 225hp with the standard single system. In 73 all non-fleet Cs had only single exhaust.

This car belongs to a member here. A great solid car and well worth the money. I saw it two years ago at Hershey and:BangHead: all the way home.

posted in his ad for the blue 79 that he had a Michigan dealer license. what else would you call a guy that sells cars with a license
