I am converting my 1967 Sport Furys front drum brakes to disc. I have installed 73 disc spindles, bearings, dust seal, new rotors pads and calipers. new parts were ordered for a 1973 Fury everything went together fine until I went to put the pads in the outer pad will not fit and I can not figure out why. Has anyone else run into this problem? can anyone see something I am missing? am I using the wrong calipers? I have to wait until Monday to go get my cores back to see if they measure different than the ones I replaced them with.

I'm going to hazard a guess, but to me, it looks like you haven't bottomed out the piston in the caliper yet.

Piston is forsure bottomed out there is a gap between the piston and the inner pad. Im pretty sure it has to be the wrong calipers, but this is the second one I got from two different parts stores.

Hmm, well the calipers look right to me, certainly the same as the setups I have in my cars. Something is screwy for sure, but unless we have detail pics of a setup already working, I think we cant see it.

I did exactly the same conversion you did I had to take a grinder 2 the pads because they didn't fit in quite right if I remember I just took a 16th off.

I will look back to my notes when I get home make sure we're on the same page

That last pic is it fully retracted

I will ask again.
Take a pic of the caliper off the car showing the piston retracted....
Can only help someone who is willing to help themselves..
I am looking for more than just piston location..

I had read that in a few threads on here but I feel like I shouldn’t have to grind the pads to get them to fit with all factory parts.

I know it does make sense but, it did and the pads were off the shelf made in China probably from Auto Zone.

Here is my assembled conversion if this helps.

Ok I think I have it sorted out now. Thanks for all the input and suggestions. turns out it is the wrong caliper. There is about a 1/8 difference in the caliper between the B body and C body calipers. After getting the wrong ones from two parts stores I went back and got my cores back to measure and sure enough that is why the outer pad would not fit. I will just be rebuilding the calipers I have.

They are always trying to sell us B body stuff. It makes it tough when they appear identical and you don't have a core to compare them to.

That was going to be my question: do you have the right one? I ran into the same problem. I was at the parts shop where I bought them arguing with the salesman that things were not fitting. My buddy, "Big Chris," a professional mechanic, came in at that moment, saw what was in my hand an said, "Why did you sell Scott a B Body Caliper; he has a C."

Thanks Buddy!!! Everything worked well once I had the right calipers.

You earned that Red X with that statement. Factory parts or not, your putting 73 parts on a 67 that didn't originally come with it, there's always some form of modification's that need to be done. Good Luck

Yeah I understand that completely and totally agree with you, However 73 rotors with 73 calipers, on 73 disc brake spindles should take 73 brake pads with out modification.

I can't tell from the pic, but does the conversion kit include, or need, the positioning clips that go on the back side of the caliper where the pin slides through?
I got these a few years ago from Harmon.

I had the exact same issue on my 68 T/C wagon when I went 73 disc swap, but only had that issue on one side. Took me a few days of hair pulling to figure out that the rebuild company had put a B-body caliper in a C-body box. Got a new one and all slid together properly.

Glad you got it sorted out!
