Very rare 1 of 279 1982 Frank Sinatra Imperial | Classic Cars | Regina | Kijiji

I’ve always liked those cars, but I have read and understand they had lots of issues. Question though! Why when they make or made special edition cars, is it always odd ball numbers like posted 279? Why not rounded numbers? Like 250, 500 ??

Sometimes they do make even, limited numbers... Like the '69 Charger 500. Five-hundred built to satisfy NASCAR homologation rules.

Other times, they don't.

I wonder if the FI still works?

For $1k it likely does not. These cars still show up every now and then with really low mileage because they could not be kept running right or sometimes at all. Most of them were converted to a standard carb fuel system by the factory. For those who did not take that offer, they are pretty much SOL as most of the parts, including the computers went obsolete years ago. Best bet if some one wanted to make a reliable runner out of it would be to find one at a wrecking yard that had the carb setup on it and start swapping parts. These cars are not generating much collector interest at present, so it would be crap shoot if one of these would be worth saving. Frank Sinatra got really pissed at Chrysler because the car he got would not stay running either. He did not like having his name associated with a car that had a reputation of being a POS. This was not the first time it had happened.

Special edition cars usually had an initial run and depending on how well and how fast they sold, the factory would process existing orders and try to project further sales. Some of the odd numbers were probably based on these forecasts and some no doubt
on how many could be produced on whatever line was making the car per shift, per day etc.

Rear bumper flaking chrome. Show stopper for me as I was unable to find anyone that would re-chrome aluminum.

All of the other J Imperial issues can be dealt with (EFI, digital dash being the other big items)

Wish him luck as there are probably only a handful of people who consider the "rare" Sinatra edition as meaningful...

My name is Grumpy J. McFiddlesticks and I hate everything. You'll be pleased to know I sent a telegram to the seller and soundly chastised him for attempting to sell this car (that I did not approve of in 1981) for the outrageous sum of $1000 Canadian dollars.

Can the bumper be powdercoated?

Anything that can be baked at 500° can be powder coated, Bob.
I would color match the bumpers to the body color.
Yes, but I'm a stickler for originality (I would not do body tone)...does powder coat chrome look like ...well chrome? Or is it a more dull look. Pics I've seen appear more dull. Good option though that I had not seriously considered.

On the subject of bumpers... there are good cores out there (without corrosion) I have a set grabbed years ago from a Phoenix pic-a-part.

And... if you ever examine these bumpers closely, they are extremely simple, a rub strip covers 80% of it and they're made in 3 pieces. A good fabricator could easily make them in heavy gauge steel, which could then be chromed. Not as easy as simply buying a used one, but really not impossible (as would be the much more complex R-body chromed aluminum bumpers).

A lot of time, trouble, and expense for a thousand dollar car that doesn't run... :poke:

I did not see interior pics,I wonder if it has the center console on the Trans.hump.I had a front Alum.bumper Rechromed years ago locally when I owned my '82 Imp.I had a decent core.

Y'all might be missing something! ONE of the items which made the FS Edition what it was was a set of FS tapes, included with the car, and (as I recall) had a holder in the center console of the car, keeping them ready for use. Without those items, it's just another Imperial . . . Kind of like the "bar kit" for the rear seat of a '57 Cadillac Eldorado.

The EFI system can be upgraded to something more modern. The 318 can become a "torquer" 360 or LA stroker motor (considering its WEIGHT and rear axle gearing). Chromed aluminum used to be how some wheels were done! Digital instrument clusters might be fixed by some of the Reatta or other GM digital instrument clusters (think '79 Olds Toronado Trofeo) repair stations (those that might be left). Or just replaced by analog Cordoba items.

The wider white sidewall Goodyears wer a throw-back to earlier times, it seems. Plus the full wire wheel covers. Modern blackwall Michelins just won't cut it.

By observation, most powder coated items have a more satiny surface texture than a hard chromed texture. Especially after a few years of exposure to the elements.

Otherwise, lots of little trinkets that might need attention.

Possibilities there for the right person to make a nice car of it.
