66 Monaco Wagon - Cargo Area Panel Trim

The interior of my wagon is in pretty good shape with one exception, all of the inset upholstery trim is missing from the metal floor and tailgate panels. The top of the rear seat backup panel has remains of adhesive and you can see where something was screwed in place but I can't tell what these trims looked like. My questions:
  • Can anyone post photos of what this material looked like for a 66 Monaco?
  • Is this trim material reproduced and are precut pieces available?
  • Has anyone replaced this on a slab wagon - what did you use and what was involved in the install?

It's basically the same carpet as what's on your floor. There are metal strips that hold it down and double as rub strips. The carpet is bound around the edges with same coloured vinyl as your door panels. Pretty much any 65-68 C body wagon will have the correct metal rub strips - check with Murray Park if no one here chimes in to help - the carpet panels can be used as templates when you sew up your new ones. The metal strips will polish up nicely, and use chromed Phillips screws similar to what you'd find on the dash in various places.

Was the carpet glued to some sort of backing board, as the door panel trim is? With chrome grommets around the screw holes?

The strips are chrome, as are the screws. If you're able to zoom in on my photo you'll be able to see them as best the photo can show.

Thanks, I did zoom on your photo, what I'm looking for are pics of the other panels such as the floor and the back of the second row seat.
 
I'd take pics of mine, but it's buttoned up and parked away from home for the winter and is a PITA to get to. Hopefully someone else can help.

I did a good bit of interior work on my 66 T&C, hated to do it cause it was so original but couldnt stand the couple of small rips in the drivers seat. Anyway, I will try to help you with this. Give me a day or two to get some pictures for you. The metal strips are going to be the biggest issue for you. Nobody remakes them so youll need to find a set of used ones. I think they must be stainless because I hammered several dents out of mine and spent hours polishing them. Looked close to new after many hours of polishing. I replaced my carpet (Stockinteriors.com) and purchased extra square footage for the many pads for the back. The pads are made up easily by any good upholstery shop. They consist of a dense backing cardboard, the carpet and then a stiched strip of vinyl around the edge (matching the seat vinyl). No vinyl on a couple of edges.... anywhere the carpet is held down by a hinge including the tail gate flap and for me at the trunk hinge (no 3rd seat). If it takes some time to find the strips you can go ahead with having the pads made up and even install them. But the pads will likely tend to bukle and wrinkle. The strips help with this issue. The pads are screwed down along the perimeter of each pad (you will be able to see the screw holes in your cars panels) with stainless screws and little finish washers that have a raised lip. Not sure what those are called. No grommets. Those few screws and washers are not sufficiant to hold the pads flat though, need the strips to help with that. The pads were glued down from the factory but mine easily released from the metal surface, not alot of glue. I did not use glue when i reinstalled. I will get some pics for you and can offer some more details if you need. Several things to consider. All that new carpet in back may make your floor carpet not look as good as you thought. That was the case with mine. Cant get formed carpet for a 66 T&C so I had to get it for a Newport which means getting small sections made up for the area that shows on each side of the back seat that doesnt show on a sedan. easy fix but has to be done. Releasing those spring loaded hinged panels are tricky too. Will get some pic for you as soon as possible.

Thanks 1966 t and c, that description helps a lot. My interior is about 60 to 70% original, selected seating surfaces have been replaced and all floor carpeting and windlace are new. I'll start looking for a set of rub strips - anyone out there have anything?

Looks great, too nice to not have the back done for sure. After looking at my wagon this morning I see that only the tail gate panels have the screws and washers at the corners in addition to the strips. The other panels are only held in place by the metal strips. On my wagon and probably yours the sizing of the panels will be easy because they fit inside the recessed areas of the metal panels. Also on my wagon there are two panels that have no viynl trim at one edge. the flap panel that covers the space between the tail gate and the cargo area and on the trunk panel. Both of these panels mount under hinges and I guess the extra 2 layers of viynl would make the panel to thick to cleanly mount under the hinge and would not be seen anyway. The panels that mount on the back of the 2nd row seat and bridge panel dont mount under the hinge there so they have viynl trim on all 4 edges. Hope this is helpful.

In addition, if it's a nine passenger with the third seat, the extra large panel is actually two panels, (one folds up for the rear seat back, and the other slides over - again, I can't remember exactly how it goes without looking at mine), and there are some delrin rub strips near where the sliding panel goes. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow or the next day, as I have to go over there now as it turns out.

Wow, very helpful. Great pictures and even the same color as my interior! I see now this will be a pretty big project,
 
A question for other Monaco wagon owners - does your car have the carpet and metal strip treatment as shown in the T & C's, or something less fancy?

I think I just answered my own question here. I dug out my original "Dodge Rebellion" Polara / Monaco factory brochure and found this picture in the back. It looks like the panels were some type of embossed vinyl or plastic in black. While I love the T & C treatment it looks like it isn't correct for my car. Does anyone have a wagon with this material intact and some additional photos? Was it always black or was it available in different colors? Has anyone replaced this and can you recommend a supplier of the material? Thanks again for any help.

That is what our 65 Polara has.

Ours is a red color.
