Hey all,

I'm starting to throw around the idea of selling my wagon. In the 3.5 years I have owned it, I've only ever seen 3 others for sale, only one other that I'd say is comparable condition (TXDon). I've only ever known of one person on here that has one. What's everyone's thoughts on rarity and values on the wagons in the next few years? For those of you that don't know my car (taken from window sticker),
1966 Monaco 9 passenger

California car, bought off a collector in Maine (oddly, when you google 66 Monaco wagon, the photos from the original listing still show up)

This is an extremely nice survivor, original paint and interior. No rust ever.
Since I've owned it:
Sourced a nice set of the mag hub caps
Replaced carb with 1406 Edelbrock
Had front bench seat base re-stuffed
Converted to dual master cylinder - replaced 1 brake line and 1 wheel cylinder during the work.

It's starting to show the need for deferred maintenance:
Original radiator should be recored.
Heater core
Typical leaks for a 54 year old motor
Front end is starting to get a little sloppy.

Has a minor scrape on the rear tail end, damaged trim. Chrome all around is good, but not show. Wood grain paneling is sun damaged and dull.

Needs rear rails repaired - not for rust...looks like a tow truck driver used the drain holes to hook and damaged (about a 2 inch split in the metal).

Yes, I know that they are only original once. I'm not really asking what people think its worth, but what are the odds if I let it go that I will ever find another, or that I'll always regret it. At this point I have a few other projects, and this takes up so much garage real estate!

So do you have a figure in mind that you'd like to start with or are we guessing and just throwing numbers out there like mud on the wall to see what stickz? You wanna sell it, Throw a number out, We're all grown upz here, Jer
 
I value it between $14K - $16K. Like I said - this is more about finding out how many of these might be left out there in similar condition, and what the wagon market might do in the next couple years. I realize its not a fuselage, which seem to be going for stupid money on occasion. My first preference is the 66 Chrysler wagons, might search one out in a few more years.
 
You are right about the rarity factor. Before I found mine I had been looking for a wagon for at least 4 years, not just Dodge but many brands. I saw lots of listings for Chrysler T&C's, Furies, and Polaras but I think this was the only Monaco I ever saw. As far as value the whole wagon market is pretty hot, when I was looking it seemed there were two extremes - clapped out projects or really nice restored or modified cars. The one constant was that almost all were expensive, some ridiculously so. There were very few decent original cars which is why I jumped on mine when it came up. Some of the condition issues you describe will hurt you value-wise. You can get opinions here but to really know you need to look at full marketplace listings. Only you can decide if you really want to sell it. Good luck.

After re-reading your ad I still fail to see those #s or any #s for that matter. A/C doesn't work? Radiator and Heater core both need re-work? Typical 54 YO motor leakz? Transmission pan? Front seal? Rocker cover? Pan gasket? Freeze plugz? If all those leaks are pressent you're ah bit more then optimistic with your #s I'd think sir. I bought a rust free SoCal '61 9 passenger New Yorker in '85 and over the next 22 yearz I dropped 4X your #s in it and still lossed my A$$ when I soid it in 2012. Your car, your call, so good luck and I guess they say theirz an A$$ for every chair but, ????. Pahleez don't respond, I'm not trying to start an argument. In my option the "rarity" factor isn't going to effect the price as much as the love for wagons now. I would say a 66 Town and Country would be in the same neighborhood.

I have seen the prices go crazy in the last few years, so Jer's sale in 2012 isn't really relevant now. Sorry Jer you probably sold a half dozen years too early. :)

I have casually been looking at wagons from 65 to 71 for the last 6 years. 5 or 6 years ago they were in the price range I was willing to part the money with, now they aren't. Good luck with what ever decision you make.

14-16K sounds optimistic to me but you never know. Here's a 66 T & C in similar condition to yours. I know we're not comparing apples to apples but I think this one and yours should sell in the same general price range. I guess I should have led in with this...
I do not candy-coat my description of the car, because I am not a salesman, or at least not a good one, and I'm not trying to sell it right now. I've gone to see enough cars and been utterly disappointed with the seller's description, which often is an outright lie (AC just needs charged, runs perfect, needs nothing!). In this forum of folks smarter than me (and yes, most of you are), I'm not going to pretend a 54 year old survivor car is perfect. The radiator doesn't leak, but it appears original and shows the white/green powder around the tanks. In my opinion, needs recored, which I planned to do next spring. The heater core works and doesn't show a leak, but blew our some white power when I ran it this spring. Tells me there is a slow leak. I have only needed to add about 2 cups of antifreeze since I bought it. It leaves a quarter size spot of oil when you park it, but I don't have to fill the oil between the annual change I do. The bottom of the motor and tranny is a bit wet. I believe a car is worth what someone is willing to pay and a factor of the markets, not trying to make a profit. Every classic car I have ever bought has been a loss. The guy I bought if from paid $16.5K in 2007. I paid $14K in 2017. Stupid? maybe. He was asking $16K. Talking about price doesn't bother me. I paid up for originality and the influencing nostalgia of growing up with a wagon. But certainly, I don't want to let it go for $10K only to see it on eBay from a flipper. I also don't want to price it so cheap I see it on Bitchin' Rides with airbags and a hellcat engine. Nothing against modified cars, but this one is too nice to try that. Heck, I won't even put non-original rims on it.
 
I think you are in the right ballpark to start negotiations if it is truly rust free needing some minor mechanicals and cosmetics.

You are going to have to wade through a boatload of lowball flipper bids and other Richard Rawlins wannabes before you get a serious offer though.

Let me just put this out there as a a owner of a 383 a/c car . I had my cooling system re done this past fall had the radiator taken apart had the core boiled out then rodded out had the original tanks cleaned out then had it reassembled replaced thermostat and housing upper/lower hoses had the block & heater core flushed out then everything put back to factory spec cost $1100.00.

Body work on these older cars is harder to find someone qualified/willing to work on and is not cheap. If i were looking at your car and looked at your list of what was needed i would be thinking i would need to be spending in the neighborhood of $2000.00 to $2500.00 to correct the list not including the woodgrain that would probably be another $1500.00-$2000.00 just offering you some ideas of the cost of repairing these wagons from my experience .hope this helps you .
 
FWIW I saw the '66 T&C on ebay and thought it was a fair price. It's been a while since I have bought a vehicle on ebay, but it used to be the auctions were non-binding. Meaning you bid whatever you wanted and all it got you was the first right of refusal. (Same for the seller)
 
While we’re on the topic of ‘66 Dodge Wagons...
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a new headliner???
