Trunk weatherstrip seal 1971 new yorker

You have checked the popular (usually B- and E-body oriented) aftermarket restoration vendors, but NOT the manufacturers' websites. As in Steele Rubber Products.

The particular deck lid weatherstrip is something of a generic Chrysler weatherstrip. NOT specific to that particular vehicle, other than its possibly longer length.

"Roll goods" is what the term is for that item. Measure the length, end to end, and then look in the Steele Rubber online catalog to look for the side profile and size of the current weatherstrip. They might also have a listing of what you need in their online catalog!

In measuring the total length of the weatherstrip, add 1-2" to the length you come up with. That extra length will allow the two ends to overlap when they meet, so you can cut through the overlap for a nice butt-end to apply adhesive to and it will look very nice when done.

Enjoy!

Ok for the experts here on this site. I found my original seal and compared it to one i purchased many yrs ago. The purchased one seems to be the same as the original ( compare photos) also the original was glued to the body. But where. See pics of the body. All information is helpful.

Also a pic of a sealed up trunk would be helpful.

This is my 1973 Imperial with that seal. I use 3M 08001 which is yellow glue.

Remove the old seal, clean the gutter and rollout your seal. Use masking tape or clothes pins to hold it in place. Cut to length and set aside.

Using alcohol, prep the surface and brush on the glue. First on the gutter. With the help of an assistant brush the glue onto the first part of the seal, wait 5 minutes for it to tack up. Apply and keep going down the seal until the gutter is covered. Use a junky 1” paint brush you can throw out.

Use a touch of glue and glue the ends together. For a proper look, offset the seal up to 12” of center. Do not center the seam.

@RWCearley -- what did you end up buying for your 1971? Do you have a link, and can you confirm that it fits and seals?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the suggestion. I checked Steele Rubber, and indeed there's no link to trunk weatherstripping on the 1971 Dodge Monaco or 1971 Chrysler NYer pages. HOWEVER, there's one on the 1971 Polara link that is supposed to fit PD senior cars from 1963-1974 (they do not list C or Y models, but -- at least for fusies -- the trunk AFAIk is the same on all PDCY):

Note that the profile is similar and the dimensions are the same as those for the 1971 Challenger -- but the Chally's is 2ft shorter (14ft in length, vs. 16 for the Polara):

Note that there are not one but two choices for the 1971 Polara: P/N 70-1438-WT "peel-and-stick" (with 3M-tape backing), and P/N 70-1438-85 "glue it yourself". They look slightly different. Steele Rubber, however, states that the P/N 70-1438-85 "trunk weatherstrip is an exact copy of the original and requires a glue-on installation. For an easier installation consider 70-1438-WT which has a Peel-N-Stick adhesive strip while being dimensionally equal."

On the recommendation of @azblackhemi, I will be replacing Medina's original trunk weatherstrip by P/N 70-1438-85 (which replaces factory P/N 2604149, 2783557, 2604151, 2838661, 2838662, 2838149, 3412164, 2964122, 2964123, and 2964124).
