Rear end upgrade for 59 Dodge CRL Questions

I've been told to look for a 65-69 C body rear with 46" spring perches, my questions are, can you get a highway gear, something like a 2.90 in a sure grip? If not, in what ratios did the sure grip begin? If such an animal does exist, how would one find it? Casting part numbers? Identifying tags...

WANTED 11x3 Heavy Duty Rear Brake Drums

I’m working on a ‘62 Dodge 440, I put a new Sure-Grip differential in it. One thing has led to another and I ended up having to purchase rear brake assemblies. Without knowing how rare they are, I bought a set of 11x3 backing plates and hardware… now I can’t find a source for 11x3 drums. They...

8.75 rear axle - room for 2 bearings?

I'm really curious about why you'd want two bearings when ma-mopar built hundreds of thousands, possibly millions globally, of 8.75 rear ends and while they continuously improved the axles, splines, tapers, diameter etc and changed third members, gears sets, sure grip but never added 2 bearings...

    83/4" rear endcswap.

That I did not know. Is that true? I thought for the tapered axle rear end you have to find an early sure grip pumpkin which is damn difficult and really limits what gear ratios you have available..?

    Welcome, megalomotors

I learned the Newport was purchased with the intention to pull a trailer and was not primarily a daily driver. Which explains no air (Ohio, trees, rivers, lakes) Royal not Custom, but 440, Sure-Grip, Towing. Rear defrost and heat. Perhaps buying a well equipped but base model allowed for the...

    83/4" rear endcswap.

I think you can use a later sure-grip but the center spacer is 1/4" wider, so you need to shorten the axles 1/8". Emphasis on "I think you can". I've never done it, but I think I read about someone else did that. Again "I think". If that could be done, you could buy an aftermarket...

    83/4" rear endcswap.

Your 61 Chrysler should have an 8 &3/4 rear from the factory. The Sure Grip option started in 1958. Do you want to swap to the non-tapered axels? If that is what you are looking to do, there are charts that list the different size housings. You should be able to find one that bolts in.

    1964 NEWPORT

...are whining, and the bearings are grinding> Definitely do get them complete with known good bearings and all the shims. If you have a sure grip rear in your 64 you will have to shorten/grind the 65/later shafts just a touch. Because the pre 65 sure grip has a slightly larger thrust block in...

He probably cares more about having the sure grip than the tapered axles. Nice 61! Ya gotta love that clear steering wheel and astra dome cluster!

NOT MINE Not C body but Mopar 65 Barracuda

It is much easier to deal with a car that size on many levels. And!! They are a ball to drive. The 273 Commando is a pretty good motor for these cars. Most likely that has a 3.23 Sure-Grip and that makes the rear a lot stronger as it's the spider gears in the open 7 1/4 rear that go bad...

    400 with a 440 transmission mix-n-match issue?

I can now rule out the engine/transmission as part of the issue. It is definately speed related. Though I took the one bent rim out of the equation, I still have a vibration at 65mph or higher. It doesn't come through the steering, it's the whole car (I feel it in the floor boards, my seat, see...
