FWIW, we use a Walmart Group 27 battery which when bought was made by Johnson. It died a little early a year ago, so we got a warranty replacement free, which is an Exide job. I like how Exide includes a little indicator telling folk whether the thing can be salvaged or not. Anyway...

Yes sounds good. you can leave the trans on the jack under the car, and you can check the u-joints while the driveshaft is out. It's just hard to feel when something is bound up when trying to clear the crossmember with the oil pan and tilting the engine.

you could hook a hose to one of those nipples and flush the heater core out and/or get a vacuum gauge (mity vac) hooked up and see if it's leaking or if someone just disconnected it (probably leaking so don't get your hopes too high).

IF you have a/c, there are 2 rubber hoses that connect the heater core to the ''h" pipe inside the heater box...these may be leaking and not the core itself but the whole box needs to come out to fix them...there is vent housing at the bottom of the box that 2 air distribution hoses come off...
