    413 Engine advice----1965 NYer

On a already broken in motor that you have no idea on the condition of the internals? I wouldn't waste any money on high quality oils that you'll never get your money out of if the motors trashed. Just throw a can of STP in instead. But DO use a quality filter. JMHO Good Luck

If I was you, I would just go get a WIX oil filter and the Penn Grade oil (both available from Summit), and change the oil asap.

    ZDDP in engine oil

My engine builder as well as my "race car mechanic" both use Brad Penn now Penn Grade break in oil. It is a synthetic blend. I use their regular oil in my C Bodies because it has ZDDP except for the Flyin Whale, in which I use Royal Purple because of that engine's oil requirements.

fixing up my 70 NEWPORT need help with sourcing parts?

Power Steering Fluid - Any name brand or NAPA's power steering fluid. Oil - Recommend Penn Grade (formerly Brad Penn) or a good quality name brand oil and a ZDDP additive. Penn Grade is a semi-synthetic with ZDDP added. Your engine needs ZDDP, which has been removed or greatly reduced in...

Like Matt, I'm running Penn Grade oil in my '66 440 TNT with 90K miles. But I use 20W-50 weight.

The only thing I would add to 413's excellent advice, is to make sure you do the oil change with Penn Grade 15W-40 or another high zinc oil. It has a high ZDDP additive package that is needed in an engine with a flat-tappet cam. Also, install a WIX or NAPA Gold filter too.

    ZDDP in engine oil

I only use it in my big truck. 20w50 Penn Grade in the cars. Mainly because either car can get caught in show traffic with extended idle times.

...wood. Not a fan. Kendall (name) pulled out Bradford Pa, moved to Texas or some God forsaken place like that. Brad Penn is the same oil from the old Kendall refinery the green oil is the old GT-1. It is now Penn Grade 1 oil, still refined in Bradford Pa. In a RR tank car to Indiana to be...

Hey! Thanks, Dave. Back in the day I remember Kendall GT-1 was touted as the hot setup for HP applications.

    Did I fry my engine?

Yes. With over 97K on the clock, do this with Penn Grade 20W-50 and a new NAPA Gold filter.

A lot of us use a high zinc oil that is a little heavier than what you said. Personally, in my two '66 300s, I'm running 15W-40 Penn Grade a brand new rebuild 440, and I'm using 20W-50 PennG rade in the other. It has 90K on the clock.

Blowing Out 440 Oil Filter Gasket :/

...a NAPA Gold filter. It's a WIX. Or get a WIX filter directly from Summit. What kind / weight oil are you using? You can get high ZDDP Penn Grade 15W-40 or 20W-50 oil from Summit too. Is this engine a new / rebuilt engine, or is it an engine that has been sitting for a long time? If the...

Started out in 1965 using recycled oil in the glass bottles for 25 cents a qt. Before I hung up my overalls recently I used Walmart reg oil. 55 years and never an issue from using cheap oil. My new vehicles, I get whatever crap they use at the Dealer's $29.95 loss leader Oil Change Special. I...

What engine oil are you using?

Oh boy! Another oil thread! I use Penn Grade 20W-50 in my '66 440. The car has 85K on the clock. But I'm thinking of going to Penn Grade 15W-40. Penn Grade is a high ZDDP oil and is available from Summit. Oh. . . And use a WIX oil filter. Summit has those too.

    ZDDP in engine oil

With a flat tappet cam, ya gotta run a high ZDDP oil - not regular oil with an STP or whatever additive. I'm running Penn Grade (formerly Brad Penn) 20W-50 in my '66 440 TNT. I order it from Summit, where I also get a WIX oil filter. I also use a NAPA Gold filter, because it is really a WIX...

    Excuse my ignorance but ?

...I add some lead additive to the fuel a few times a year in addition to using higher octane fuel. As for oil, you need to either use a ZDDP additive or buy an oil like Penn Grade that has it in it and it is also a semi-synthetic, which was recommended to me by an engine builder and master...
