Cam swap worth it? '68 383 newport

Hi Metalmarty, As the C-body is a heavy car i want as much torque as possible down low and that mild Lunati cam give me the power where I want it, It pulls real good from idle to full throttle shift, but with a higher stall TC I might have choose a little less mild cam. To me the 3.23 is a good...

    Help to choose Torque Converter

Well Hughes wrote: The 24-25 is a neutral balance converter. If you want a bolt and go externally balaced converter, you need the 24-25 440 BAL The "performance" I'm after is to get higher rpm to get of from standing still when flooring.

Cam swap worth it? '68 383 newport

Hello from Sweden, I'm in a simular situation during TC but have already build the engine: -66 Polara, 383 0.030 (389 cu.i.) flat forged pistons @0.019 down the hole, Edelbrock RPM intake, E-Body HP manifold, 2.5 double exhaust, 650 AVS2 carb, cold air intake air cleaner, 3.23 Auburn rear end...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

"I also notice that some WOT testing was about afr 12.5-13.5 but some of them was more at 14-14.5 at the same run just a minute after the other between I floor it from cruise at highway." Today I notice that maybe the difference is if I run uphill or on a flat straight. I always testdrive when...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Did a 46 mile highway cruise today (30-60 mph) with a couple of stop at crossings, never going to power mode at primary and filled it up before and after, the result: 2.76 gallons. Giving me 17,7 mpg? It should be OK don't you think?

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

This Sunday it was 60F and I'd only change the secondary jets to .113 and now the afr is just what I wanted at WOT, about 12.5-13.5 The hesitation is there but ever so slightly, now I can't see it on the afr meter anymore but I can feel it very very slightly. The result in changing only the...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Did some vacuum tests today: In gear with the brake on at idle 6-700 rpm: about the same, 16-17" Flat road at 1.500 rpm: about 20" About 24" when letting the throttle off. Tried without the PCV connected and of course vacuum plug blocked between the tests. No changes in afr, so I keep the PCV...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

I think we agree but express ourselves differently. The manifold vacuum is the same with both intake manifolds but maybe a little odd, about 18" at 700 rpm idle in "P" but up to 20-22" at steady 1.500 rpm in "P".

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Maybe I'm overthinking this but it isn't the first carb I've calibrated... I do the afr adjustment at the primaries first and then WOT, just as you explained. I don't agree that the primaries don't affect WOT mixture as you write: "No, one will not affect the other" I'll keep finding an...

I run with Spectre Cold Air intake Spectre Performance Musclecar Cold Air Intakes 733 thats why I dont do the jettings when it's too cold but please write about how you solve to get better drivability with a cold engine in the cold times that took time to do. Sorry, the area I present earlier...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

That I realize, but the Edelbrock carb tuning guide recomend to tune WOT first and then the Eco/Pwr (primaries mixtures). Agree and I'd always tuned my carbs with that in mind, thats why I think that the Edelbrock carb tuning guide is misleading. I've never start with tuning WOT but now when...

But if you change rods then you change the mixture in the primaries.

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

One thing I think about is that the Edelbrock carb tuning guide recomend to tune WOT first and then the part-throttle saying: "The Metering Rods feature used in the Edelbrock carb allows easy calibration of the part-throttle without change to the WOT metering..." Is that really correct? Doesn't...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Update. Today I manage to get some time in the garage and testdriving. The temperature went from 44"F (7"C) to 55"F (13"C) since I did my last testdrive. I didn't change the main jet, still .110 but I turn the AVS another half turn. I didn't change the nossels, still .040 I didn't cange the...

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

I don't know if the marine pump have richer calibration but the spring is stiffer so I think it pump faster. Yes it's a fixed volume pump but I think that at the outer and middle hole there's not enough movement to empty the pump as much as in the inner hole, am I thinking in the wrong way perhaps?

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Thanks for all the inputs!! It seems to be a lot of testing this weekend (if weather permitting). I did some of the testing already but I will come back with all the results. I have full control of the rpm, vacuum and afr as the meters are close to each other in a visable panel of meters.

383 intake manifold changes AFR big time

Correct, hesitation it is. As for the pump and nozzle, at the moment I have the "marine" pump with stiffer spring and .040 nozzles mounted, stock is .031 or .035, I don't remember. Pump rod at the riches inner hole. I have a .043 nozzle that I can test with. I'll give that a try too. I've also...
