    Usually a backfire is from going lean, ether the float level is low, or the accelerator pump isn't working properly or mis-adjuisted, if it happens when the throttle is opened quickly. Since it is idling smooth, I would guess it doesn't have a vacuum leak My $.02

    I knew 70 and 71 6bbl engines came with big rods. I had a 72 440 4bbl CHP motor that had big rods. My question was did 440 4bbls in 70 and 71 have big rods. and the answer is yes.

    Now that I think about it, the only 70 up 440s I've been into is a 70 Superbird 6bbl and the 72 CHP car, both with the 6pack rods and damper, all the other 440s I've messed with are older. Saforwardlook, that is a beautiful E! Thanks for the clarification.

    I know from personal experience, you won't have any problem finding the drive shaft (if it is different from the 3 speed) the A833 and the A727 uses the same driveshaft. Any A727 automatic driveshaft will work. My $.02

    I've heard 1 quart of ATF in the oil, run it easily for a short time then change the oil. The huge amount of detergent in ARF can free up lifters.

    Question: did you confirm the timing mark on the damper? Maybe advance it 5° more to see if it runs cooler or starts pinging, needless to say, if it is pinging, put it back ASAP. make sure you are setting the initial timing with the motor at idle < 800 RPM. My $.02

    I've never had any issues dropping the X member on ether a C or a B body, but I've never worked on a non California car, no underside rust. pop the 10 bolts (yes there are 10) and replace the mount.
