Differences in SLAB steering boxes - advertised to be equivalent 68 Newport but not so

Correct. I’ve sold a bunch of steering boxes from parts cars & many had a thick shim. Some didn’t. You can usually make most any of the work with some mods. Or at least I have. Maybe I was just lucky.

Got a brake kit, here is what doesn't fit

I used the Dakota master with the Mancini Racing 2 bolt to 4 adapter. It’s a race car so I didn’t use a booster. The FMJ guys use a K car booster when they install a big block & want a booster. Look closely behind the master & you will see the adapter. I had to only replace one line. Look close...

    Steering gear slop and noise!?

Worth a try. It may be too tight & burn the box up.

    Steering gear slop and noise!?

On that steering coupler pot. If you end up having to rebuild it a common trick is to drill a hole in the housing & tap it for a grease fitting. Just make sure you have clearance and doesn’t hit the exhaust. Then you can put a little lube in it as needed.

    Steering gear slop and noise!?

That’s true with the engine on , but it mask the other steering components. And if the box is worn as bad as I think his is he will feel it.

    Steering gear slop and noise!?

It came off a car I parted so I never drove it. I did the 3 inch test & the play was within the 3 inches. I would guess 50-70 bucks to ship to west coast. If you like the car & want to keep it buy a new reman box. You’ll thank me later. Check Rock Auto. They ship out of Texas. A little closer to you

    Steering gear slop and noise!?

Yes it’s a tough job. Mark the column to gear box pot & steering wheel so you can put it back the same or the steering wheel will be off going straight. 3 bolts hold the box to the stub frame. 11/16ths I think. Pickle fork to break the pitman arm from the centerlink. Then once on the bench rent...

It will just get worse but you can try. Just loosen the lock nut & turn the adjustment screw 1/2 turn. Lock it down. It might help some. Don’t keep adjusting it. There’s not much adjustment. Check those other steering items for wear as well.
