62 Newport "large Marge" Gets Fitech Efi

The project continues, finally had time between customers cars and other projects to get some work done on the 62 we started calling "Large Marge" as a joke!

General Information

Finally got it to the exhaust shop after scrapping and recoating the underside of the floor. Cleand up the engine compartment a bit. Added an aluminum radiator and electric fan, 95 amp alternator, new water pump, PerTronix ignition w/ new coil, high torque starter, 4 barrel intake and Fitech EFI. She starts and runs way better now and sounds mean!
Next will be rearend swap and front end rebuild, then wheels and tires upgrade. Then hopefully body and paint soon! I will keep updating as the build moves forward.

Comments

I have been musing about converting my Newport to EFI. How much do you reckon you spent in the conversion? Are starting, ideal, and top end all better with EFI?

Does the throttle body supply enough vaccuum for the power brake booster and other vacuum-dependent things?

In just the efi, I think fitech complete kit was $900. Then new intake, so $1,100.
It's a bit off a job but you can do it in a day. Be very careful where you mount the fuel pump because it will vapor lock.
Top end and throttle response are leaps above the old 2 barrel carb. Transmission shifts better too. Vacuum is not an issue everything is working well. There are several vacuum ports to choose from on the throttle body. Probably have around 400 miles or so with the efi installed.

Starting is better too, but I had a lot of issues with the original starter and points. New igintion and high torque starter solved a lot of my start problems. You can set the idle where you want with the fitech controller.

Hop chop, I am very interested in a project like yours. Have you done any mileage checks? I was hoping EFI would be one thing that could improve fuel efficiency of these large engines.

Have not checked mileage yet, Speedo took a crap on me. Also I'm pretty heavy footed, I like to hear her sing! They say you can gain around 5mpg. My carb was running way rich so I know mine has improved just dont know how much.

As soon as I get speedo fixed and can check it I'll let you know how its doing.
