I'm in the process of changing out the original carb to the 1406 Edelbrock. I'm watching the video, and I'm trying to determine if I need the intake adaptor? Its the original 1966 383 4v. The gasket provided fits, but the original intake has the 4 holes. Sorry for the basic question...

OK, So I went out and bought the adapter just in case, figured out that it does not line up, so I am assuming it isn't needed. Here is my next question - how do I remove the adapter from the old linkage? It had nuts on both ends, but I can't get it to budge. Do I just need brute strength or is there a trick to it?

I've also just discovered that I will not be able to use the original air cleaner. Is there a mod I can do? An adapter? I really would like to keep it stock.

Two wrenches on both nutted sides and unscrew

It actually appears that the hole on the top of the carb/bottom of air cleaner are different sizes. The hole on the original air cleaner is too small to fit on the carb.

Well, I gave up for the day. So I am interested to know, from anyone that has done the conversion:
1. Everything I read says to connect the positive of the electric choke to the ballast resistor. Anyone have a picture on how they did it? Did you splice a wire going into it?
2. Help on picking the right air cleaner, or adapter. Looks like if I use an edelbrock I will need to add the air breather tube attachment?
Anyone know if I need a spacer? Should I go 14" or 10"?

Many thanks!
Joe

Joe. Mancini Racing sells a 14" drop down base that should work with your 1406 and let you use your stock air cleaner top and the stock size air cleaner element. The 14" base is just big enough to hold the air filter and is much smaller in diameter than the air cleaner top resulting in the air cleaner drawing in air from the bottom around the air cleaner top as well as through the snorkel(s) letting your engine breathe better. They were on sale last month, not sure if they are still on sale.

I had the same problem on my Barracuda, I ended up getting the Edelbrock 10" filter and only using the bottom and my top would work.
That is not the case with the factory air cleaners that have the pan bottom with a lid on top.

Here is a thread on FABO on the subject, as far as I know there are no adapters for this.

The Edelbrock is bigger than the Carter AFB

Thanks to all that have responded so far. 1978 NYB I bought that adapter kit and it looks like it will work. I need to do one slight mod to it tomorrow but should be an easy mod.

I still ask that anyone that has connected to to the ballast resistor to try and get me a picture of how you did it. If I need to tell you my skill set, I had to look up what a ballast resistor was to make sure I was looking at the right part!

That is my last connection before trying to fire it up.

Thanks again,
Joe

After much consternation I figured out the wiring. After 5 seconds she started right up, and kicked down to a low idle properly. Tomorrow I will check the carb tuning and try it in the road. Thanks to all that helped. I’m pretty impressed with the swap and the carb...
