1965 Newport Identification Help

Hey Folks,

I too have a 2dr 65 Newport. C1 designated the model, not by my car but on the door post plate its the first part of the VIN tag. Im sure many of you know that but thought I'd mention it. Also have you looked for your build sheet ? Check behind door panels, under seat springs. Lots of info there , really tells the story of the car.

Had mine out yesterday, first time in about a month, did it some good to move around. !

Hopefully you made some copies of it? Either with a high-megapixel camera or a color copier?

Enjoy!

Newport's should be "CL" then a 2 digit number specifying the body type. 2 door hardtop would be 23. Chrysler "Low" - CL23

And in 1967, the Newport became "CE" for "Chrysler 'Economy" to make room for the new "CL" Chrysler Newport Custom models. I would have to verify in my '66 Chrysler FSM, but I seem to recall "CE" being in the model list, but not used?

The 1965 and 1966 Chrysler Newport Town Sedans had an upgraded interior from the other Newports. As that body style was discontinued for 1967, the Newport Custom seemed to replace it as to interior upgrades for the Newport line. 1967 Newports were "CE" and Newport Customs were "CL".

FWIW,

CL, that's right, going by memory so that's why I said C1. As for my build sheet it was taped to the back of a door panel. I was real happy to find it. Not in the greatest shape but there and readable. I did make a copy.

A '65 will still be letter-number so C1 VIN is correct.

The two letter Line-Submodel CL Newport designation starts in 66.
For MY 1967, the Newport goes to the CE designation.

I would love to have pix of your car's fender tag and the CAR PRODUCTION BROADCAST to assist in development and testing of my decoder. Often the printed numbers are so faint as to be hard or impossible to read. If that is the case, I'll need your help in reading the sheet. If a '65, I can get you a pretty good report.

Sure I can get those for you. Fender tag not great though. Have a terrible time trying to upload photos, I've tried in the past. Comes back saying file too large. So email best, send a PM. My car is a 65.
Glad to help you with your project

Fender tag readability can be improved by cleaning and then lightly sand the tops of the letters and numbers. Worst case, carefully remove the tag, save the unique screws and photograph the back of the tag--in a mirror. Alternative, transcribe the data to me via this platform by giving me the number pairs from the top two lines, the letter-number pairs from the middle two lines and the entirety of the bottom line with spaces. Example for the tag below: 1-1,2-2,3-9;A-9,B-9,D-5,E-5,F-1,G-2,X-7,212-12489,C12-L8R,WW1_ _ and, at least, the first four digits on the VIN. Perhaps: 8153. PM coming.
