1965 pace car restoration

Not much progress this last week as I’ve been sorting out the front end in my 60. I did get a new set of splash shields. I’ve been waiting on a new set of brake shoes but they’ve gone missing in the mail apparently.

Little more progress. I have assembled one of the rear brakes. I’ve had trouble sourcing the correct 11x2 drums over here. My originals were stuffed. I managed to pick up a new set of the late 11x2 drums from a mate. Still waiting on a few other bits too arrive in the mail. I also need to get under the car and clean all the dust off the diff and so forth. We’re in the middle of our worst drought on record here in Australia and we have so many out of control fires at present. Very hard keeping anything clean.

I had a change of plans and decided to go with a dual master cylinder. I’ve installed new shoes and hardware and managed to locate some good front drums today from a mates parts car. Just waiting on some new wheel bearings for the front and back to arrive now. I also picked up some new marker lights from a later model CBody. Not original but I like the look of them. I’ve run similar on a few of my previous 65’s. Just waiting on the new brake block to suit the dual system and I’ll make the lines to suit.

I know it’s not for the purists but I’ve always has dual rear antennas on my cars. Something I did on my very first 65 I built as a 15 yr old 30+years ago. I spent quite a few days procrastinating over whether I should or shouldn’t run them on this car, but I started out building this car for my liking. Something to drive and enjoy and relive a bit of my youth. Its never going to be a concourse correct resto. I also modified the rear trim clips this week. I have never had a lot of luck with the original speed nuts.

Not much achieved in the last few weeks. I have been buying more bits. All my new bearings and seals have arrived and I also picked up my new left hand mount that a local company rebuilt for me

I gave the front and rear trims another light polish and have dropped them off to be clear anodised. II also fitted the new front wheel bearings and seals today as well as finishing the new brake lines for the dual master cylinder. Also bought a couple of new anti rattle grommets for the top. Hoping to fit the new rear axle bearings and seals later in the week health permitting.

 Looks great!

Wise move on the dual master cylinder conversion. I think everyone should do that on any car that's going to see significant time on the road again. Especially since it's really not very hard to do, unless you have a car with factory Auto Pilot, then the bracket for the servo is in the way.

Thanks mate. I did originally set it up with the single, but now that we are looking at moving back home to where the roads are a little more worthy of having a safer brake setup

looking real nice. what was your process for polishing the aluminum trim. I am wanting to do the trim on my wagon soon.

Hi mate I strip the anodising off with oven cleaner first. Then do any repairs. Then sand with 600, 1000, 2000, wet and dry then machine polish. I think I might have posted pics earlier on in this thread. Cheers Terry

Did you have to do any special prep besides polishing before anodizing?
Not too many shops left in the US that will anodize.
