Although the situation seems to have reached a turning point, I ask for future readers.
Was the linkage installed completely/properly? Did the linkage move the selector valve properly?
FWIW, 'pump failure' would not be my go-to cause for this. Not even after seeing the damaged pump journal.
That doesn't affect operation, it's an issue toward long-term durability of the pump bushing.
