I found out why my heater core had been bypassed. It wasn't really a surprise, leaking inside the cab after about 2 minutes of running water through the core, at just garden-hose pressure, to flush it out.

I need a new core, but all I can find are cores for vehicles without A/C. Mine has factory A/C....
So what's the difference? Will a core for a car without A/C work? What's the difference between the two?
If the with A/C and without A/C models are not interchangeable, anyone have a source for the with A/C cores?

Any tips on the project?

Once again, thanks for all the tips and adivce folks!

Classic auto air has the A/C dual heater core for C body for $269. On E-bay with 100 percent feedback. Have not used them myself, but it is almost half the price of National Moparts.

Ouch!
That's about 5 times the cost of a without A/C core....
I guessing from the difference in price they are not interchangeable, right?

The heater boxes are different. Whether the heater only heater core will fit inside the ac/heat heater box will be a roll of the dice. You ned pics of both and compare and taks yer chances

The heater core for the A/C cars is longer and thinner than the one used for non A/C cars. They do not interchange. I would pull the old core and take it to a good radiator shop. Most of these cores were a copper /brass tube type that can be repaired if they are not corroded too badly. Most of the time they leak close to the hose mounts due to cracking or someone getting too rough pulling the hoses. Bad news is that it is an all day job to pull the heater A/C box from one of these cars and it is a major pain in the butt with the dash still installed. FSM describes how to do it.

A pain in the butt? The Service Technical Manual I have says removal in around seven steps...and boils down to pretty much "unbolt it, remove it, replace it"...
What could be easier?

There's a good bit of difference between the A/C and non A/C heaters - years ago I ended up with the wrong one and I'm still sitting on it. The larger one is the A/C unit.
