Good Morning,
This weekend, my dad and I tried to wash the New Yorker, along with giving it a polish and wax. The car appears to have the PT7 Coffee Sunfire Metallic paint. The wash went well, and the trunk and hood seals performed well. However, we tried the Meguire's polish and we noticed that the applicator was coming back brown, so we only did that in a small test area behind the front wheel, since we were worried that it would strip the paint off. Then, we applied the Meguire's Wax (non satin, matte, and flat paints), and we saw no change in the look of the paint, so we decided not to wax the rest of the car. What is the best way to clean up the paint on a 77 New Yorker with Coffee Sunfire Metallic original paint?

It's not unusual for a polish or cleaner wax to do what you describe on an older paint that has some "age" to it. Remember, those cars were "all paint" with no base coat/clear coat back then.

It can be tricky to know when to STOP polishing on those older, darker colors! You want to remove enough of the oxidized paint BUT not remove it right down to the primer!

You might want to consider using their red-bottle cleaner wax for a general clean-up to get things looking better. Then follow it with their seal/reseal glaze, to put oils back into the paint. Letting that cure a few weeks and then follow it with their Hybrid Ceramic coating.

Enjoy!
