Anyone have an idea where I can pick up a new brake pedal return spring and the corresponding seat? Mine is FUBAR.

This pic I found online from a Dart but my Polara has the same deal. Need the spring and seat.

Here's the diagram from a Dart FSM (again I got it off internet to save time but I have same diagram in my Polara/Monaco FSM). Looking for the spring that coils over the push rod and the seat.

The two factory part numbers I have for it are;

2534347 Spring
2260709 Seat

I haven't been able to locate any sources for it though.

Parts are nowhere to be found. Looks like I'm going to have to improvise.

To clarify, this return spring only serves to ensure that the brake light does not stay on. It doesn't play any part in actual braking.

Hardware store Lowes has a pretty good selection of that loose stuff a good old local style one might be better still.

Yeap. I think I'll have to fashion something. I was thinking one of those pipe covers from plumbing could work as the seat.

So I went down to the Home Depot and found myself this hole plug to use an improvised seat for the spring. It was just a little bit bigger in diameter than the original seat, which is what I wanted. I crimped the little wings toward the center and then I drilled the correct size hole in it (based on the original seat which I had pried off).

When I disassembled the brake pedal I confirmed what I had been suspecting. The spring had been put in backward when the master cylinder was replaced (by a certified mechanic). The end of the spring that rests on the firewall has a larger diameter than the end that rests on the seat. Since it was in backwards the seat was too small to contain the spring. Still, the old seat was still too far gone, so I went ahead with the plan and the new, improvised seat.

I used a couple of tie wraps as spring compressors to get everything in without too much fuss. I put a fat O-ring on the push rod right on the flange that holds the seat in place as extra insurance so that the new, improvised seat wouldn't just roll over the flange.

Once I had everything in place I snipped the tie wraps and let the spring take its place. Worked like a charm. Brake pedal now returns to the point where brake lights shut off as they should.
