Can’t get steering wheel back on

Well those small files did the trick! Took me quite awhile to get the burrs cleaned up, from my own doing! The threads on the wheel are a bit messed up so I plan on using tap and die to fix the threads on the shaft and the nut. Again, thank you everyone for the help! Got lucky that I didn't smash it beyond repair...lesson learned!

Good for you! You can clean up the threads on the steering shaft with those files as well. One thing bad about using a die to clean those threads is that you will start cutting new threads instead of chasing the messed threads to straighten them out. In a perfect world, you could start the die on the good threads and clean as you go to the end. That's impossible unless you have a split die which they used to make, but I don't think they do any more. You can start on the good thread end of the nut and use the tap to renew the threads, If it get's hard to turn, back the tap back out of the nut , clean it and go back in. You don't need to break a tap off inside the nut.

Better yet, buy a set of thread files like these: https://www.amazon.com/Thread-Resto...-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1
