Well I am back again with another problem on my ‘65 Imperial. I recently had to switch to a one piece driveshaft after having a hard time finding the necessary parts to repair my two piece driveshaft which was in pretty bad shape. Even the driveshaft shop that I took it to, which is very well known in town and handles all kinds of builds couldn’t find the cv joint to replace my damaged one.

Anyways, I came to install the driveshaft with the mechanic but he couldn’t slide it in through the crossmember that supports the two piece driveshaft carrier bearing.

Now I was wondering, could this crossmember be notched or cut to sit lower to give a little more clearance to fit the driveshaft?

The driveshaft was made as the same length as the original two piece and also has a slip yoke as well. I’ve attached some photos of what I mean.

I don't know those cars, but could that bracket be removed? I can see that the parking brake cable goes through it, what else does it do? Is it structural or just there to hold the carrier bearing?

It’s actually welded to the frame. The only thing that used to sit there was the center bearing for the driveshaft. But I am not really sure if it’s structural or not. I was thinking of keeping it in place, but just cutting the middle piece and have it lowered a bit.
